A CULTURE of hard work driven from the earliest stages of Palm Beach Currumbin State High School’s netball program is credited for the plethora of talent to have emerged from it.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS has revealed its greatest netball side of the past 50 years as it continues to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022.

The school has already announced its greatest Australian rules and soccer sides and has now put the spotlight on the netballers to have come through PBC.

Headlined by current Sunshine Coast Lightning Super Netball player Jada Gafa, the 11-person team boasts an array of high calibre players.

“I honestly couldn’t be more proud to be part of the culture created by greats like (PBC Sport Excellence program founders) Rod Patison and John O’Keefe,” Former student and coach Jasmine Scaysbrook said.

Ruby Paton, Kari Arrow and Jada Gafa have been named in PBC’s greatest netball side.

“We have really worked hard at continuing this culture through netball, and I feel extremely proud to be a part of that as a student and a coach.

“Being a ‘red’ is something I am truly so proud to be a part of, and you don’t know this magic until you’re there experiencing it.”

Scaysbrook was part of a three-person panel to decide the make-up of the team, along with Meegan Bruggemann and Selena Morris.

Gafa, her sister Bryah Gafa and Abi Houston have all been nominated for the school’s Hall of Fame.

Scaysbrook commended the trio for their contribution to the school and also highlighted the enormous efforts of Charlie Duke and Rosie Gale.

“Lots of these girls are exceptional role models for women in sport,” she said.

“The Three (Hall of Fame) nominees all captain of their team, Abi Houston was co-captain of Australia and school captain, she was an absolute relentless athlete and so intelligent on the court.

“Rosie was also one if the best brains in our game, it was not only physically tenacious but she could also see the game strategically different to most others. And Charlie Duke represented the Indigenous Australian netball team, she was an extremely accurate goal shooter and also very versatile as she moved across many positions on the court wherever the Reds needed her.”

Many of the team members were part of the side that won the 2014 State Championships with PBC.
