Gold Coast Football Cyber League Guru: Wet weather dampens season start

The Guru checks in to see how football fans are fairing in the face of all this wet weather, and cautions not to get too comfortable with your top players. SIGN UP AND WIN THOUSANDS IN PRIZES

Replay: Gold Coast Premier League – Palm Beach v Southport

The impact of the recent wet weather has thrown the Cyber League and its players into

chaos with the number of games postponed and rescheduled.

Although complete rounds are few and far between, small pockets of action continue to get played among the FQPL 3 competition with players still recording good point totals for their selectors.

The time of year is coming however where players are starting to question their positions at

clubs and whether they wish to continue playing there for the remainder of the season.

This becomes a tricky point for many when managing their team and expectations with the

transfer date still not close considering the amount of games still left.

Some big games await in not only the league when it comes to title and top four aspirations

but Cyber League also. Generally, most Cyber League teams are heavily weighted with

players from the top end clubs who all have pivotal games coming up.

Robina City are undefeated and top of the table with Henry Adams dominating the point

tally in the Cyber League space. With a tough run ahead and some possible squad shifts

around the Coast can City remain on top and continue to record points in the crunch?

A lot will be known within the next few weeks as we approach somewhat good weather and

hopefully complete some rounds and allocate awards accordingly. Let’s hope for a transfer

window coming up to adjust teams as required.

The Guru: Can anyone catch Mehic?

The beginning of the Cyber League kicked off over the weekend and unfortunately we can’t

even see the end outcome due to a fixture not being played between Robina and Southport.

One thing is for certain though – anyone with Runaway Bay striker Fikret Mehic will be

locked in for early season awards after he bagged six goals against Nerang.

Palm Beach came close as they put on a show at home against Tallebudgera with Josh

Squires scoring three in the process- remember my call going into the weekend on who

would be a good pick? Big points on offer from those players I mentioned but what would I

know!

Despite all that the participants who started prior to week one won’t be able to change their

teams until the first transfer block. However, if you’re reading this it’s not too late to jump

in and win some of the weekly prizes on offer.

Keep an eye out for another Josh Squires big evening on Friday as well as a possible clean

sheet (rare I know) for Kingscliff at home against Nerang. Getting easy points at the back are

a godsend!

Week 1: Key team building tips ahead of the opening round

AS we approach the opening of the Cyber League competition we have already seen a whirlwind of results, performances and slips through the first five games of the FQPL 3 South Coast season.

One thing is for certain- all that goes away once the Cyber League kicks off this weekend as points (and prizes) come into play.

Teams have already been created and the so called ‘experts’ are all vying for the top spot in the cyber world.

It’s good to see some teams follow my advice and pick up certain players that are a guarantee contributor on the points end.

Unfortunately, some of those players might not be the difference to help their team get the most important victories they require.

Goals have dried up a little since the opening few rounds and last weekend was probably the most stale when it came to big points on show in the Cyber League.

Nerang have been good for forwards to pick up big points but considering they only fell 3-0, has the tide turned and will we see less points scored against the Eagles?

With just two opportunities to submit player transfers throughout the season, it puts a huge onus on ensuring the strategy you use to build your team is well thought-out.

I am liking the boys up top for Runaway Bay to fire up again and keep an eye on Ethan Leighton to bag some goals if he manages to play. Again, the crucial part is finding goal scorers across the field in their respective positions (especially in the backline).

Points are skewed towards forwards as mentioned in my earlier column. Find the goal scorers, get them in your team before it is too late and good luck.

Key Cyber League Picks Week 1- Ethan Leighton (RWB), Koki Miyasaka (BRO) and Josh Squires (PAL).

The Guru: How to set your team up for success

THE INAUGURAL Cyber League competition is set to kick-off at the end of April and ruffle some feathers within the Gold Coast football community.

The chance to win more than $16,000 of prizes thanks to Village Roadshow is an incredible perk, to go alongside the ultimate goal – claim the Cyber League Champion crown.

Every good competition has its in-the-know pundits and I have graciously offered myself to the role of Cyber League ‘Guru’ this season.

My identity will be kept confidential but that is fine, because what is ultimately important is what I can do for you, the would-be Cyber League champion.

I may not have the smarts, guile or skill of some of our FQPL3 stars, but my knowledge of the cyber world and how to maximise pointscoring potential will make me a valuable asset this season – I hope.

With two weeks to go until the Cyber League season begins, here are some top team-building tips to help those who have yet to pick their perfect pointscoring squad.

TOP TIPS

1. The Aim of the Game is Goals

In soccer the aim of the game is to score more goals than your opponent.

The Cyber League is exactly the same – earn more points than your competitors. The key selection criteria should be who can score me goals no matter the position they play (and in a defensive position even better). If you find a goalkeeper who might bag one from the penalty spot, give them a go.

2. Don’t Fall In Love with Stats

Statistics play a huge part in sport as a whole. But, don’t forget that these guys are still amateurs and stats go out the window on most occasions. Cast an eye out but don’t base every decision on the numbers.

3. Diamonds In The Rough

The key to win in any fantasy competition is finding a diamond that nobody has come across that collects mass points. As the Cyber League has no weekly transfer windows, finding a diamond could be the difference for a handy 4-5 rounds of points.

Players to Watch

Here is a list of two players from each position I would be picking in my team to try and beat ‘The Guru’.

Goalkeepers:

Jackson Boyd (PAL) and Scott Semple (SOU)

Defenders:

Ben Pluples (MUS) and Johnson Slotemaker (KIN)

Midfielders:

Henry Adams (ROB) and Tom Miller (PAL)

Forwards:

Tomoki Asakawa (BRO) and Fikret Mehic (RWB)

In the coming weeks I’ll go in-depth on my reasons why these players should be regulars in your Cyber League team. Keep an eye out for more key insights to help you get the leg-up and potentially win thousands in prizes.
