It was a day of firsts for the summer in the Cricket Gold Coast Taper Premier League’s 11th round, with one man scoring a maiden century for his club and another managing to take more wickets than runs he went for. Who made the team of the week?

1. Tahla Abbasi (Mudgeeraba Nerang)

110 (103) — 10x4s and 1x6

Yet to raise the bat and rip the helmet off for Mudgeeraba Nerang, Tahla Abassi at last achieved his first major milestone with the club. Striking 10 boundaries and a six in scoring his first century for the Bushmen, the opener was in his own domain on Saturday in spearheaded the defeat of Helensvale Pacific Pines. He even chipped in with a catch for good measure.

2. Trent Keep (Broadbeach Robina)

1/22 (4) and 59 (82) — 6x4s

The Broadbeach Robina leader continues to go from strength to strength. Trent Keep registered his sixth score of 50 or more from just eight outings, striking a composed 59 to help his side to yet another win. The allrounder even chimed in with the key wicket of Alberton Ormeau opener Sabah Syed when he looked set on 34.

3. Hiran Wickramasekera (Southport Labrador)

62* (105) — 6x4s

In need of a win to keep their top four hopes alive heading into the two-day phase of the season, Southport Labrador needed their top order to stand up. Hiran Wickramasekera did just that, grinding out a hard fought and unbeaten 62 in a century stand with his opening partner Will Hale (58). Timed his run to perfection in chasing a tricky target and keep those finals ambitions a chance.

4. Adam Ball (Broadbeach Robina)

2/33 (8) and 70* (62) — 2x4s and 2x6s

It is not often Keep gets outshone in this Broadbeach Robina batting line up, but Adam Ball achieved just that. After being the pick of his side’s bowlers in taking two wickets — including the huge scalp of Corey Galloway as he built a head of steam (39 off 29 balls) — Ball backed it up with a brilliant half century. Striking the ball with ease on his way to an unbeaten 70 from just 62 deliveries, the Cats star’s efforts were one for the books.

5. Matthew Yiend (Alberton Ormeau)

62 (61) — 3x4s and 1x6

Led the way for the Hurricanes in a bid to take down the competition heavyweights. Matthew Yiend fought fire with fire against Broadbeach Robina, striking his 62 at better than a run a ball before being run out. With some strong support around him Alberton Ormeau gave themselves a chance building off Yiend, only for a Cats onslaught with the willow to cruel them of victory.

6. Aaron Densley (Surfers Paradise)

1/27 (5) and 58 (66) — 5x4s

Before play was abandoned, Aaron Densley turned in a true captain’s knock with bat and ball for Surfers Paradise. Opening the bowling and taking the key wicket of Brent Anderson, Densley then showed no fear against a strong Palm Beach Currumbin attack in scoring a brilliant half century.

7. Corey Galloway (Alberton Ormeau)

1/15 (8) and 39 (29) — 4x4s and 1x6

Strong with both bat and ball in a typical allrounder’s performance. Corey Galloway began with a rampant 39 to lift Alberton Ormeau to a competitive total, before doing his all to put the brakes on Broadbeach Robina’s run chase. Made the crucial breakthrough of the dangerous Reece McDonald to keep the Hurricanes in the fight, albeit ultimately in vain.

8. Jackson Winton (Queens)

3/24 (8)

Jackson Winton gave his side every chance of chasing down an achievable target, his batsmen simply could not back up the work. The Queens first change bowler claimed three big wickets — including dangerous Runaway Bay duo Nico Reifer and Wade Kilburn — to limit any potential carnage.

9. Jonathan Baldock (Surfers Paradise)

3/30 (5)

While he would have ideally preferred to go for fewer runs, Jonathan Baldock’s breakthroughs were all crucial ones that kept the Demons on track. Taking out Palm Beach Currumbin skipper Zane Beattie — the second highest run scorer of the season — cheaply as well as the threatening Cody Durante took the wind out of the Lions’ sails, before Baldock came back on again to dismiss another key man in Jainem Patel.

10. Harrison Winton (Queens)

3/20 (8)

Another of the Winton’s to do all he could to keep Runaway Bay’s total down, only for a batting collapse to cruel his heroics. Harrison Winton was as economical as he was destructive with the ball, dismissing openers Jayden Hoare (45) and Matthew Hague (4) before coming back on and getting rid of an in-form Rhys Howarth (41).

11. Travis Harker (Runaway Bay)

4/3 (5.4)

Easily the most economical spell of bowling seen in this summer’s Taper Premier League. Travis Harker almost defied even the Boxing Day feats of Australian quick Scott Boland last year, managing to take more wickets than runs he went for. To go at just 0.52 runs an over while still taking four wickets — including Queens’ top scorer Jack Kann (29) — was a remarkable effort.

Team of the Week Rd9: Contender for finest spell wreaks havoc

— December 6

Another contender for the best bowling spell of the year came to the fore, while a pair of allrounders continued to march for their side.

Who made our Cricket Gold Coast Taper Premier League Round 9 team of the week?

1. Benji Lee (Coomera Hope Island): 2/30 (4) and 57 (26) — 2x4s, 7x6s

Benji Lee’s allround performance was ultimately in vain, however the Coomera Hope Island skipper to all he could to inspire a turnaround for his side.

While expensive at times with the ball he managed two wickets, including the key scalp of Runaway Bay’s Joel Harrison who top scored for the victors with 46.

That dismissal triggered a collapse of 6/47 whch kept Lee’s men well in the hunt and chasing a reachable target.

The opener then came out of the blocks firing, smashing a brilliant half century with a remarkable seven sixes before his loss on 57 all but ended his outfit’s fortunes.

2. Ben Daley (Helensvale Pacific Pines): 81 (103) — 11x4s, 2x6s

Not bad for a first Taper Premier League hit out for ben Daley.

The Helensvale Pacific Pines opener was composed in making his way to 81 — the highest score across the round — to guide his side to a defendable total.

Daley managed his innings well, choosing his moments to attack while fighting through a worrying patch for his team when they slimped from 1/54 to 4/78.

3. Trent Keep (Broadbeach Robina): 2/25 (5.4) and 68* (74) — 9x4s, 1x6

The gift that keeps on giving.

Broadbeach Robina skipper Trent Keep led from the front with both bat and ball for his side, taking the new rock on his way to figures of 2/25 before backing it up in the middle.

Struck nine boundaries and a six in an unbeaten 68 at the top of the order as the Cats chased down Southport Labrador’s 158 run target with more than 16 overs to spare.

4. Brent Anderson (Palm Beach): 5/9 (8) and 27* (18) — 4x4s, 1x6

A contender for one of the finest spells of the season.

Brent Anderson set up the win for Palm Beach with clinical figures of 5/9 off his eight overs, making light work of the tail in particular as Alberton Ormeau sunk to be all out for 37 — the lowest team total of the season.

Clearly was in a hurry to finish the job, opening the batting and blasting an unbeaten 27 from just 18 balls.

5. Reece McDonald (Broadbeach Robina): 3/25 (8) and 31 (23) — 4x4s and 2x6s

Another of Broadbeach Robina’s allrounders who did everything on the field.

After taking 3/25 in eight tight overs — all three of those breakthroughs among Southport Labrador’s top four batsmen — Reece McDonald then strode to the wicket at number three eager to finish the job quickly.

His rapid 31 got his side close in quick time before his partner in crime Keep did the rest.

6. Dayne Siede (Mudgeeraba Nerang): 74* (71) — 5x4s, 2x6s

Dayne Siede has been in a strong purple patch of form, and he continued that for the ladder leading Mudgeeraba Nerang.

What perhaps made his unbeaten and quickfire 74 so impressive was the fact he did plenty of running, with only 32 of his runs coming in boundaries.

Along with Lydon Gibbons clinical 46 in the middle order and Howard Biddle’s composed 43 at the top, Siede orchestrated his side’s formdiable 5/226 which Queens never got within shot of.

7. Steven Baker (Queens): 51 (54) — 4x4s

Steve Baker did all he could to salvage something for his side against the leading Mudgeeraba Nerang.

His half century stand with Ned Hanrahan (48) looked promising, however they simply did not get any further support from the rest of the batting order.

Nevertheless he can hold his head high after a fighting half century in which he still looked to score freely despite the precarious situation his side found themselves in.

8. Finn Lonnberg (Palm Beach): 3/17 (7)

It proved to be an impressive spell from Finn Lonnberg, who combined his wicket taking abilities with tight areas to suffocate the Alberton Ormeau batsmen.

Took the key scalps of opener Matthew Yiend and Hurricanes skipper Reece Neyland while going for less than two-and-a-half runs an over in taking his best figures of the 2022/23 campaign.

9. Matthew Phillips (Coomera Hope Island): 3/14 (6.4)

Like his captain, Coomera Hope Island’s Matthew Phillips fought valiantly to give his side a chance of lifting themselves off the bottom of the table.

Was econimcal in going for just a tick over two runs an over, while his three breakthroughs were jsut reward for his efforts.

While two of those wickets came from the tailenders of Runaway Bay, it was the tight bowling from the top that helped the rest of his teammates take key wickets regularly and give their side a chance.

10. Will Mahoney (Mudgeeraba Nerang): 3/19 (7)

Economical bowling with plenty of penetration, Will Mahoney finsihed as the pick of the attack for Mudgeeraba Nerang.

His big wicket of Baker ended Queens pursuit of the leader’s competitive target, while he helped himself to final scalp of the match for good measure.

11. Ryan Maloney (Helensvale Pacific Pines): 3/13 (5)

Ryan Maloney ensured that Surfers Paradise were never going to get close in their run chance from the outset of his spell.

All three of his wickets came within the top four, triggering a collapse alongside fellow opener Alexander Hayes to have the Demons dead and buried at 5/20.

Team of the Week Rd 8: Innings of the year contender revealed

— November 28

What a time to be alive being a top order batsman on Saturday was.

The pillars of the Cricket Gold Coast’s Taper Premier League batting line ups had a field day, with three centuries and a pair of 90s scored across the weekend.

One of them may just have been the most emphatic knock of the campaign thus far.

So who made the cut in our Round 8 team of the week?

1. Howard Biddle (Mudgeeraba Nerang); 100* (126) — 6 x 4s, 4 x 6s

The man has been a run scoring machine in recent weeks. Howard Biddle ran out of runs to chase two weeks again when he finished unbeaten on 88, but this time around he ensured he reached triple figures. Again not out at the top of the order, the Mudgeeraba Nerang opener was precise throughout his innings, combine strength in his four sixes with effective running between wickets — with more than half his total coming through putting in the hard yards.

2. Zane Beattie (Palm Beach); 105 (106) — 8 x 4s, 6 x 6s

A typical captain’s knock. Zane Beattie stole the show for Palm Beach in bringing up triple figures, with his partner in crime at the top of the order falling agonisingly short. Built his innings perfectly to take the game away from Queens before they had the chance to put the pads on.

3. Brent Anderson (Palm Beach); 96 (73) — 7 x 4s, 6 x 6s

Brent Anderson’s innings ended as it began — chasing runs by any means necessary. Was out stumped chasing his ton in a gut-wrenching blow, however the Palm Beach opener was emphatic in a 195-run opening partnership with Beattie. Took the attack to the Queens bowling line up, with two-thirds of his runs coming in boundaries. Deserved a hundred.

4. Reece McDonald (Broadbeach Robina); 1/32 (8) and 112* (71) — 14 x 4s, 4 x 6s

In a word: clinical. Reece McDonald never gave his rivals a chance, chasing down a strong total with more than nine overs to spare. Incredibly 80 of his runs came in boundaries, seemingly in a hurry to get out of the sweltering sun. Timed the ball brilliantly from start to finish to have Coomera Hope Island’s outfielders chasing their tails in one of the most destructive knocks of the campaign. Even took the crucial wicket of Kushaal Ram when the Coomera gun was approaching a ton.

5. Trent Keep (Broadbeach Robina); 3/38 (8) and 55 (59) — 9 x 4s, 1 x 6

While he sits atop of the Broadbeach Robina batting line up, we have moved Trent Keep down the order both to accommodate his all-round output and ensure he held a thoroughly deserved place in the side among the clinical top order. Kickstarted his day with three wickets — including the crucial breakthrough of Coomera No. 3 James Kleinschmidt for 35 — before proving the perfect foil to McDonald’s onslaught. Where McDonald looked to destroy the attack, Keep ensured he kept the runs ticking over and gave McDonald his chances to strike in their century stand. A fine all around performance from the skipper.

6. Kushaal Ram (Coomera Hope Island); 90 (98) — 2 x 4s, 5 x 6s

Was promoted to open the batting for Coomera Hope Island and did so brilliantly. Kushaal Ram was largely the lone hand in his side’s pursuit of a competitive total, falling agonisingly short of what would have been a well earned century. Not content with finding the rope, he endeavoured to clear it with every opportunity — his five maximums compared to two fours evidence of that. Another fine knock to add to his collection for the summer.

7. Wade Kilbourn (Runaway Bay); 3/30 (8)

Did not get a chance to strut his stuff with the bat, but took two crucial early wickets that orchestrated their rival’s demise. Wade Kilbourn was quick to put Burleigh on the back foot, taking the key scalps of Robert Lord for a duck and in-form skipper and No. 3 Michael Spargo for one to have their opponents reeling at 2/8. Came back on late to take his third and set up a low run chase for his top order.

8. Adam Ball (Broadbeach Robina); 5/35 (8) and 23* (32)

The only man to claim a five-wicket haul in round eight, and backed it up with a handy knock to finish the job for his side. Adam Ball tore the heart of out Coomera’s middle order, finishing with 5/35 to give his Broadbeach Robina teammates a chaseable target after Ram’s early innings heroics. Came to the crease with still plenty of work to do, and proceeded to rotate the strike with every opportunity to keep McDonald's momentum rolling.

9. Jainem Patel (Palm Beach); 3/51 (8) and 18* (10) — 1 x 4, 1 x 6

Was expensive at times in his spell, but restricted Queens when needed to put the breaks on their run chase. Jainem Patel finished Palm Beach’s innings with a bang to hit a quickfire 18 before setting up defending the target. Eventually took the key wicket of Ned Hanrahan (46) before taking two wickets in three balls to end any chance of a come-from-behind win.

10. Steven Graham (Runaway Bay); 4/8 (8)

Not only prolific with the wickets but among the most economical spells in recent memory. Runaway Bay vice-captain Steven Graham destroyed the Burleigh middle order and never gave them a chance to score. Remarkably, despite bowling out his spell, he went for a paltry one run an over in one of the season’s leading spells of pressure bowling. Superb.

11. Nathan Lyons (Mudgeeraba Nerang); 4/29 (8)

Nathan Lyons never gave Southport Labrador the chance to breath from the moment he took the new ball. Decimated the Tigers middle order with a clinical spell of bowling that eradicated any chance of chasing down Mudgeeraba Nerang’s strong target. His performance backed up his four-wicket efforts last week as he hits a purple patch of form heading towards the Christmas break.

*NOTE: Team has been selected based on wicket and runs output, particularly in the context of each game. Team of the Week: Round 7

— Hannah Davies, November 22

Redemption was the theme for the Round 7 Team of the Week as three batsman blasted their way to half centuries just a week after getting out for a duck. See the full team here.

Round 7 Team of the Week

1. Scott Sanderson (Burleigh): 82 from 100, 5 fours

He was on the losing side against Broadbeach but that didn’t stop vice captain Scott Sanderson from blasting his way to 82 from 100 balls. Sanderson went on a strong run with captain Michael Spargo before fellow Team of the Week member Trent Keep put a stop to them both.

2. Isaiah Borgas (Palm Beach): 58* from 85, 8 fours

Round 7 had to be big for Borgas after a disappointing performance in Round 6, getting out for a duck. Borgas is still yet to reach his best but 58 not out from 85 deliveries on the weekend gave his side the confidence they needed as they sailed through to an eight-wicket win.

3. Reece McDonald (Broadbeach): 68 from 55 balls, 9 fours, 1 six

Another Team of the Week member to bounce back in a big way after a Round 6 duck, McDonald notched his best score for the season with a half century.

McDonald continued the momentum built by Trent Keep and Connar Robson, and then made up for some when Adam Ball was dismissed on three.

4. Connar Robson (Broadbeach): 75 from 71 balls, 8 fours, 2 sixes

He’s been in and out of the team so far this season, but if Broadbeach can lock in Connar Robson and Keep as their opening batsman, it could be a deadly duo for weeks to come. Robson started the season slowly, but like many in his team found good form in Round 7.

5. Dayne Siede (Mudgeeraba): 68 from 80 balls, 6 fours, 1 six

Siede becomes the third player to bat his way into the Team of the Week after scoring a duck the week prior. A score of 68 from 80 balls including a six well and truly made up for it.

6. Lucas Poeppmann (Coomera Hope Island): 90 from 85 balls, 7 fours, 4 sixes

He was the only hope Coomera had on Saturday, coming in as number seven and nearly smashing his was to a redemption arc for Coomera. His performance was a stark improvement from previous weeks and will force other teams to be wary of a late comeback we now know is possible.

7. Trent Keep (Broadbeach): 59 from 60 7 fours, 1 six and 4/42 from 8 overs

Keep proved to be the ultimate all-rounder in Round 7. As opening batsman, Keep pushed his side out to a healthy number alongside fellow Team of the Week members Connar Robson and Reece McDonald. Bowling 4/42 from eight overs, he dismissed Burleigh’s biggest threats in Scott Sanderson and Michael Spargo.

8. Talha Anis (Mudgeeraba): 44 from 51, 6 fours and 1 six and 3/17 from 2 overs

Talha Anis is another Team of the Week member who has built over the past few weeks to a strong Week 7 performance. Anis had a strong performance with the bat scoring 44 from 51 balls, and put out an even stronger display with the ball taking 3/17 from just two overs.

9. Jared Neuhaus (Palm Beach): 4/43 from 8 overs

Southport Labrador were never going to be easy to defeat, but Jared Neuhaus’ work to dismiss captain Phil Tunnicliffe and Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi laid the foundations for a win. Neuhaus took four wickets across eight overs, dismissing nearly all of Southport’s middle order batters to leave Southport under the pump.

10. Zane Anderson (Palm Beach): 4/24 from 6.3 overs

Picking up from where Neuhaus left off, Zane Anderson took care of the lower order to ensure a late comeback from Southport’s batsman wasn’t possible.

11. Nathan Lyons (Mudgeeraba): 4/35 from 8 overs

Lyons was instrumental for Mudgeeraba on Saturday taking plenty of early wickets to put the pressure on Coomera. He dismissed opening batter Kushaal Ram after 17 runs, then removed number three Caleb Millman for a duck and sent captain Josh Henderson packing before he could build any momentum of his own.

*NOTE: Team selected based on batting and bowling output. Out and out wicketkeeper may not have been selected as a result.

Round 6 Team of the Week

A series of batting masterclasses and a pair of chief destroyers headline our Round 6 Taper Premier League team of the week. Among the top order, six batsmen remained unbeaten in their stands. Who made the cut?

1. Trent Keep (Broadbeach Robina); 120* (121) and 1/30 (7)

An innings fitting of the captaincy title. Trent Keep led from the front as Broadbeach Robina chased down Runaway Bay’s competitive target, striking 13 boundaries in the process. Prior to his innings he chipped in with the key wicket of his Runaway Bay opposite Jayden Hoare after the latter had laid a solid foundation with bat in hand.

2. Howard Biddle (Mudgeeraba Nerang); 88* (100)

Howard Biddle was the only man in his side’s clash with Burleigh to reach the half century mark, and he continued on from there to steal the show in a six wicket win. Time his run to perfection, with the winning runs coming with three overs to spare. Chipped in with a catch in the field.

3. Hiran Wickramasekera (Southport Labrador); 62 (90)

While his bowlers eventually made quick work of the Surfers Paradise batting line up, it very easily could have been the Tigers in similar strife if not for Hiran Wickramasekera. The Southport Labrador No. 3 was composed in scoring his 62, in an innings where only two others — Phil Tunnicliffe (23) and Will Hale (13) — posted double figures, Wickramasekera’s professionalism at the crease ultimately proved the difference.

4. Nico Reifer (Runaway Bay); 57* (77)

Coming to the crease with his side in dire straights, Nico Reifer set about the rescue mission. First in a small stand with Charles Parsons before unleashing with Wade Kilborn, Reifer masterminded Runaway Bay’s respite against Broadbeach, only to fall short courtesy of Keep’s heroics. Played his role to perfection; where Kilborn was the aggressor, Reifer made sure he never wavered and turned in a composed display which kept his side in the contest.

5. Harish Kumar (Helensvale); 71* (83)

He came to the crease with his side in strife, but Harish Kumar was quick to take the game away from Queens. After Helensvale succumbed to 3/28, Kumar fought fire with the fire to strike an unbeaten 71 off just 83 balls — featuring nine boundaries and three maximums. A brave innings given the circumstances which he came in under.

6. Wade Kilborn (Runaway Bay); 77* (67) and 1/52 (8)

His efforts may have been in vain, but Wade Kilborn did all he could to salvage a triumph for Runaway Bay. After combining with teammate Nico Reifer in an unbeaten 142-run partnership, Kilborn took a key wicket in Ryan Thorpe when the Cats middle order batsman had worked his way to 43. With five boundaries and three sixes to his credit at a strike rate of more than 100, it was not just the runs Kilborn scored but the manner in which he scored them which proved so impressive.

7. Kushaal Ram (Coomera Hope Island); 80* (70)

Shuffled down the order, and in doing so inspired Coomera Hope Island’s first triumph of the season. Coming in at 5/81 and facing a hat-trick ball, Kushaal Ram refused to be intimidated and soon set about plundering the Palm Beach attack. His unbeaten 80 from just 70 delivers featured five boundaries and four sixes in a commanding innings that set the tone for a maiden victory.

8. Griffith Williams (Mudgeeraba); 4/37 (7)

Just edges out his Mudgeeraba teammate Rhys Finn (4/47 off seven overs) courtesy of a superior economy rate. Griffith Williams ensured Burleigh were unable to mount a late charge towards a competitive total, kickstarting his procession with the key wicket of Jasper Schoenmaker (36 from 36). From there, Williams cleaned up the tail to ensure his side were in a position to comfortably chase down the target.

9. Jack Baird (Helensvale); 6/22 (8)

The pick of the bowlers across the round. Jack Baird tore the heart out of the Queens bating line up, taking wickets throughout the top, middle and lower orders of the outfit. His quick dismissals of Ned Hanrahan and opener Mitchell Freeman, who had found himself in strong touch getting to 46, ended a half century stand and triggered a dramatic collapse. Queens went from a strong 1-71 to be all out for 147, and Baird can consider himself responsible for that.

10. TJ Miller (Southport Labrador); 5/7 (4)

TJ Miller’s figures rivalled that of Australian quick Scott Boland’s debut efforts at the MCG. The Tigers gun was not just his side’s chief destroyer but did so incredibly economically, going at less than two runs an over and ripping the Surfers Paradise batting line up to shreds. From his dismissal of Nathan Reardon for a quick fire 38 it was all one way traffic, with no other Demons batsman passing double figures.

11. Jack Charlton (Surfers Paradise); 4/36 (7.3)

Jack Charlton claimed the big Southport Labrador wickets of Wickramasekera and skipper Phil Tunnicliffe () — the only Tigers to pass 20 as the middle order failed to fire. Taking three of the final four wickets — including Wickramasekera — kept their rivals from posting an intimidating total as they went from 6-138 to all out for 151. His batting counterparts just weren’t able to match his efforts.

Round 5 Team of the Week

A blistering half century to Shane Connors has lifted Alberton Ormeau to a tense two-wicket triumph over Queens as they continue to be one of the true title chasers of the competition.

With just one loss to their credit thus far, the Hurricanes have set about establishing themselves as a formidable force in the Gold Coast Taper Premier League, and Connors return to form could not have been timed better.

The Alberton Ormeau middle order batsman has had a tendency to make promising starts with the bat, only to lose his wickets once settled at the crease.

However his brilliant 55 from just 36 deliveries — including three sixes — set up the chase of Queens’ 201, before William Hudgson’s late innings hitting (25 not out from 16 balls) got the Hurricanes over the line in the final over.

Meanwhile, Runaway Bay’s Jeremy Perkins announced himself as the death bowler his side had craved throughout the Taper Premier League campaign, orchestrating his side’s four-run win and resurrecting their title fight.

Yet to triumph in the competition thus far, the Bay were taken to the final over by Mudgeeraba Nerang, courtesy of a gutsy innings by Josh Nelson.

However Perkins held his nerve against the valiant number three, ending Nelson’s stay on 54 to close out the innings.

His figures of 4/29 came at time when Nelson and Luke Smith (32) appeared to be cruising to victory on the back of a 70-run partnership to lift Mudgeeraba out of their own trouble.

Having set 147 to win, Runaway Bay gun Travis Harker had swung momentum into his outfit’s favour, taking 4/21 from eight overs to rip the heart out of his rival’s middle order.

From 6-59, Nelson and Smith set about salvaging the innings, only for Perkins’ heroics at the end to help the Seagulls to their first win since the Gold Coast’s T20 tournament ended.

Elsewhere Surfers Paradise were another unit to register their first triumph of the one-day campaign, with former BBL star Nathan Reardon helping himself to a fourth-straight half century in the process.

Reardon’s 50 off 31 led the way in the Demons’ 7/206, with Coomera Hope Island falling short by 32-runs in pursuit.

At Chris Willis Oval, half centuries to Zane Beattie (57) and Cody Durante (53) proved the difference for Palm Beach Currumbin as the T20 champions chased down Burleigh’s 187 with three wickets in hand.

A collective bowling performance from Southport Labrador, during which all six bowlers claimed wickets, also proved too much for Helensvale who slumped to be all out for just 115.

The Tigers had little trouble in the run chase, claiming a five-wicket win with more than 12 overs to spare.

Round 4 Team of the Week

After a near washed out Round 3, the Taper Financial Premier League returned with some heat for Round 4.

New ladder leaders Helensvale continue to dominate the Team of the Week with Sam Lickiss returning for a second time and Chandima Bandara making his first appearance in the list.

Palm Beach also scored two spots in the Team of the Week, making amends for their Round 2 loss with big performances from Isaiah Borgas and Jai Patel.

In-form Queens had the bye for Round 4.

1. Jayden Hoare (Runaway Bay): 58 (84), strike rate 69.04

Captain Jayden Hoare put out a great performance for Runaway Bay as opening batter with Charles Parsons. Despite the loss, the pair put out a strong run, with Hoare scoring a half century to give his team a real chance at the win before Palm beach found their groove.

2. Scott Sanderson (Burleigh): 66 (87), strike rate 75.86

Vice captain Scott Sanderson gave Burleigh the early runs they needed to get the win over Surfers Paradise. The opening batter scored 66 from 87 balls, including five fours.

3. Isaiah Borgas (Palm Beach): 79 (94), strike rate 84.04

After reaching a half century in his first appearance for Palm Beach, last-minute addition Isaiah Borgas is proving to go from strength to strength. With over 200 games of first grade cricket under his belt, Borgas scored 79 from 94 balls to help Palm Beach chase down their target of 196.

4. Ryan Thorpe (Broadbeach Robina): 89* (92), strike rate 96.73

English import Ryan Thorpe was a standout for Broadbeach despite losing to Mudgeeraba. The middle order batter blasted his way to 89 not out from 92 balls, including nine fours and two sixes.

5. Sam Lickiss (Helensvale): 53 (44), strike rate 120.45 and 1/19

With relatively small runs scored from Helensvale’s opening batsmen, Sam Lickiss was on a mission to get his team back into winning contention. Lickiss’ run alongside Harish Kumar, which included one four and four sixes, took the pressure off his side as they took a two-wicket win.

6. Nick Burton (Burleigh): 5/28 and 23* (10)

Nick Burton took five wickets in his side’s defeat of Surfers Paradise, keeping his opponents to some very low numbers. He pushed Burleigh out to a total of 198 with a score of 23 not out from 10 balls, including two fours and a six.

7. Steven Graham (Runaway Bay): 4/36 and 24 (25)

Bowling eight overs, the weight was on Steven Graham’s shoulders on Saturday. Graham dismissed Palm Beach captain Zane Beattie for a duck to put early pressure on Palm Beach. Although luckily for them, that pressure wasn’t felt by Isaiah Borgas. Graham dismissed every top order batsman and scored 24 (25), making him well deserving of a Team of the Week spot despite the loss.

8. Griffith Williams (Mudgeeraba): 3/20 and 11 (28)

Griffith Williams was critical for Mudgeeraba on Saturday. With the threat of Broadbeach’s Ryan Thorpe looming, Williams was able to maintain the pressure for Mudgeeraba taking early wickets in former Dolphins head coach Trent Keep, England U19 captain Adam Ball and the reliable Reece McDonald. Williams also scored 11 (28).

9. Chandima Bandara (Helensvale) 5/27

Helensvale were strong across the board on Saturday but bowler Chandima Bandara was particularly excellent. Bandara took the majority of his wickets across the middle and lower order, helping keep his opposition Coomera winless.

10. Mitchell Johnson (Southport Labrador): 4/19

He’s not the former Australian international but he’s still pretty hand with the ball. Johnson had another great day out taking 4/19 from eight overs, including getting Matthew Yiend out for a duck.

11. Jai Patel (Palm Beach): 6/35 and 6 (11)

Jai Patel was superb for Palm Beach in their defeat of Runaway Bay. Last years runners up put out some good scores at the start of their innings but it was Patel who took six wickets to prevent Runaway Bay building too much momentum. Patel bowled both Wade Kilborn and Jeremy Perkins out for ducks.
