Palm Beach Currumbin overcame a 14-0 deficit to triumph over arch rivals Keebra Park in a Langer Cup thriller decided in final play, 22-18.
The win was PBC’s third in a row over their vaunted opponents, who between them have collected 16 Langer Cup trophies apiece from 19 possible titles.
The match looked headed for a rare drubbing when a Keebra Park blitzkrieg saw PBC’s right edge defence dissected with surgical precision for three tries in the opening 10 minutes.
PBC held on for dear life with a try to Tom Weaver steadying the ship before swinging momentum back early in the second half.
RELIVE ALL THE BEST ACTION FROM THE FAMOUS RIVALRY
Keebra Park cracked under the defensive pressure with star five-eighth Dave Telea sent from the field for an infringement inside the red zone.
Three tries with Telea off the field, including a double to PBC winger Troy Duckett, turned the match on its head.
Keebra’s desperate comeback brought them within centimetres of victory but a 5th tackle stand by PBC ensured it was too little, too late, halting Blake Mozer short of the tryline on final play.
PBC coach Brad Davis said Keebra Park had showed what they were made of with another extraordinary chapter in the famous rivalry.
SCROLL DOWN FOR THE WALTERS CUP REPLAY
“It’s certainly up there,” Davis said.
“We spoke during the week about how it would go down to the wire but in the first 10 minutes I was second-guessing that.
“I knew we were going to come back but to Keebra’s credit they pushed us to the final whistle.
“We may have tonight but the boys know if we want to go a lot further and be Queensland champions we have a lot to improve still.”
Keebra’s Glen Campbell could only applaud his side’s effort.
“I told them how proud I was to come within four-points of them after going a man short,” he said.
KEEBRA’S EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE TO LATE STAR
“They scored three tries while he was of the field and that hurts but that’s football.
“You play them on another day and I think we would have reversed the result.
“You must be disappointed but I couldn’t be happier – we had our chances but that’s football.
“We could meet them again in the semi-final or in the final, and that will be another exciting game.”
Keebra Park started the match in the best possible fashion with three tries within 10 minutes to winger Levi Jones, fullback Lachlan West and centre Jahream Bula, all on the left edge.
SCHOOL OF ORIGIN: KEEBRA PARK VS PBC’S NRL DREAM TEAMS
PBC kept in range with a try to Tom Weaver late but seized back the lead with tries to edge Daniel Butturini and a double for Duckett to lead 22-14.
West’s second try for Keebra with moments to play ensured a grandstand finish with top spot in the Langer Cup ladder hanging in the balance.
Late defensive fortitude held out the resurgent Keebra side for a thrilling conclusion.
Keebra Park 18 (Levi Jones, Lachlan West (2), Jahream Bula tries; Connor Te Kani (0/2), Dave Telea (1/2) goals) defeated by Palm Beach Currumbin 22 (Tom Weaver, Daniel Butturini, Troy Duckett (2) tires; Tom Weaver (3/4) goals)
