PBC were the reigning Langer Cup champions and stacked with representative players. Keebra were the unknown group who went on to dethrone PBC before winning the Australian title. Re-live the best clashes between the two schools here ahead of the Cup semi-finals.
“It’s my favourite day of the year bar none – including Christmas,” Campbell said.
“I so look forward to two quality, competitive sides playing that I get enthralled myself.
“The standout game of all for us (at Keebra) was the 2009 final held at Pizzey Park.
“PBC were the reigning Australian champions, looking to go back-to-back and the first Queensland side to do it.
PBC V KEEBRA PARK NRL DREAM TEAMS: WHO WOULD WIN?
“They had a lot of rep players including Australian and Queensland Schoolboys and some NRL under-20s.
“We didn’t follow that path, we had no rep players in our side but we were quietly confident.
“They beat us in the round game but we came out all guns blazing.
“You go back to old footage and you’ll see the crowd pour onto the field.
“It was quite emotional for a lot of people.
“We went on to win the Australian title, the first Aus title winners Keebra had produced.
“That will always hold a special spot but they all do for different reasons.
“They were a bunch of unknowns who went all the way – they’re aren’t unknowns any more.
“In 2006, it was very early on in the Titans days. The Titans had thrown a bit of weight behind PBC in the John Cartwright days.
“The crowd was very vocal.
“Kingi Akauola took the game off them single-handedly.
“It was a close one but there are very few romps between us.
“You’d better turn up with your best or you’ll be on the receiving end.”
Phil Sutherland (PBC Head Coach 2010-2012)
“There are a couple that stick in my mind but I always go back to Kane Elgey and Jamal Fogarty and Jahrome Hughes.
“We led 16-0 in 2011 and it was 24-all at full-time.
“We went into extra-time and with about a minute to go Kane Elgey kicked the field goal in extra time to win.
“Another that sticks is watching how freakish Benji Marshall was in 2003.
“It was the final against us or at least of the main games down at Southport.
“Benji took off from basically down the front of the clubhouse, sidestepped his way to halfway on the other side of the field then went off the other foot to score down the opposite wing.
“You’ve got to appreciate good footy, and even thought it wasn’t for PBC it was freakish – that day I knew I’d seen somebody special.”
Brad Davis (PBC Head Coach 2020-)
“Every year it’s a tightly fought contest and both teams always aim up.
“The last two years we’ve beaten them in the final game of the Langer Cup to seal it.
“We had a good year the year before when we won in 2018.
“We had Tom Dearden, Toby Sexton in the halves, Will Evans and Juwan Compain but Sebastian Winters-Chang gave us trouble for Keebra.
“We beat them but it went all the way and they had a chance to score a try at the death.
“They’re the battles we’ve come to expect and this Wednesday will be no different.”
Rod Patison (PBC coach 1985-2009)
“To me I really couldn’t pick one out.
“There’s a great history. They’re the games that fathers bring their sons along to, that the community comes to, because they have an expectation of standard.
“Invariably both schools provide that.
“It’s just been an awesome rivalry and it’s one of the best things that’s happened to both schools because it ensures their quality.
Keebra Park coach’s emotional tribute to late star
“All of those games have their own magic.
“Both schools have had some wonderful teams and it doesn’t matter what the gap between them is when do play because it’s always neck-and-neck between them.
“You’ll get a nailbiter on Wednesday.”
Aaron Zimmerle (PBC coach 2013-2019)
“I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of many of the favourites already named over my 17 years at PBC, but last year’s performance by Xavier Willison was one of the best individual efforts I have witnessed in carrying a team to victory.
“Not to mention it came only a week after narrowly missing State selection.
“I will put my house on a huge performance from him this Wednesday.”
