Wavell SHS’s Langer Cup juggernaut rolled onward and upward tonight as the side’s unbeaten run stretched to four matches after a 36-4 win over St Mary’s College Toowoomba.
Wavell SHS, exuding the type of confidence which only comes with winning, led 12-nil at halftime and then 18-nil into the second half in a free flowing schoolboy match.

Tonight Wavell’s power game was just as impressive as its ball movement, with Wavell’s backrowers particularly effective on the edge.
Prinston Esera’s try just after halftime for Wavell, created by beautiful ball play from the halves and a power run by backrower Junior Taungatua, was a huge blow to St Mary’s.
Up until that point Wavell had earned the advantage on the scoreboard due to superior ball control and a growing combination which at times seemed based on intuition as much as anything.
But the reality was across the first half they were two evenly matched sides and if St Mary’s had finished off their chances, they could have been leading at the break.
However, a try to young Wavell SHS No. 13 Tahrell Feaveai next to the posts in the second half made the score 24-nil made it a bridge too far for St Mary’s.
“We were pretty disappointed at halftime, we went away from the style we wanted to play,’’ said Wavell coach Jim Francis.
“We wanted to be more ruthless in attack. And when we did that I thought we started to go through them.
“And then everyone started to be around the footy.’’
St Mary’s teased the scoreboard attendant with three near misses in the first half.
Initially they were denied the opening try when the pass from fullback Angus Wright to Mitchell Lorenz was ruled forward after a left side shift from one sideline to the other, and then another when playmaker Brayden Paix lobbed a forward ball – again to Lorenz.
And then last ditch Wavell cover defence denied St Mary’s a third try after Saints fullback Wright put his winger Preston Brown up the sideline.
It was a fine line for St Mary’s between success and a heavy loss.
“They had a lot of confidence and we were just slow out of the blocks (after halftime),’’ said Saints coach Matt Jahnke.
“You could just see the momentum build, the confidence grow. They hit harder, they pushed more. It is hard to stop that momentum.
“Then again, I thought we were in the fight up until halftime.’’
It was Wavell SHS who opened the scoring after 15 minutes when skipper Josh Pese fed Nick Ingram with a crash ball which the second rower grasped before powering over the line.
Kallum Stacey’s conversion made it 6-nil to the home side. Then after two near misses by St Mary’s, Wavell SHS were piggybacked up the field where halfback Jalen Afamasaga produced a delightful ball to winger
Kallum Stacey then scored after an off-load by the Wavell forwards. Jayden Smith’s sideline conversion then had Wavell leading 12-nil.
Noah Dwyer was outstanding for St Mary’s in the early exchanges with and without the ball, setting a high standard for his teammates.
But as the game progressed Wavell were too big, too strong and too confident.
Scores:
Wavell 36 (N Ingram, K Stacey, P Esera, W Curren, J Taungatua, T Feaveai tries, K Stacey 5, J Smith 1 goal) defeated St Mary’s College 4 (P Brown try).
