Baby-faced Wavell SHS maintained its unbeaten record in the Langer Cup with another knife edge victory, 12-6, over Marsden SHS.

Wavell led 12-nil with minutes to play, but a spanner was thrown in the works when Marsden scored with two minutes to go.

It was a defensive slog throughout a match that finished with plenty of fire and brimstone.

Wavell SHS now have two wins and a draw from three games, while Marsden SHS have one win from three games.

Prinston Esera snared a first half try and then, with 15 minutes to play, Junior Taungatua produced a brilliant solo try from 25m out after Marsden had turned over possession.

With a 12-nil advantage, Wavell then attacked with their defence as Marsden tried to gather some momentum, and clearly it was going to be an uphill battle for Marsden to wrestle their way back.

Marsden’s task was made even more difficult by a sin-binning and, with the breeze at their backs, Wavell SHS held all the aces.

“It was a grinding game,’’ said Wavell coach Jim Francis.

“We did not expect to come out and have as big a grind as it was, to be honest.

“Both teams defended their lines really well and we were lucky to take a couple of opportunities in that first half.’’

Francis said he was proud of the defensive effort.

It was a fantastic battle with Marsden, ruffled by a big and unexpected loss to Keebra Park SHS seven days earlier, coming out of the blocks ready for action.

What was noticeable was the team’s effort in defence, particularly when an inside ball was executed by Wavell SHS.

Both teams were prepared to use the ball and unload possession which led to some errors, but at least the intent of both teams was positive.

Marsden SHS had the advantage of the wind in the first half but it was Wavell who held a slender 6-nil advantage at the break.

However Marsden SHS almost struck back straight after halftime with a lovely interchange of passing seeing a chance grassed.
