This year’s GPS basketball premiership could be decided this weekend as all top four teams clash, including the game of the week between favourites Anglican Church Grammar School and Brisbane State High School.
Churchie currently sit on top of the ladder, undefeated after six games, after a big win over last year’s joint premiers St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace two weeks ago.
A win for CJ Bruton’s side means they have all but guaranteed themselves the outright title for this year – only needing a win over the fifth-placed Toowoomba Grammar in the last round to clinch the trophy.

However, the premiership race will be well and truly alive if State High, who have pushed other top four schools including Terrace and The Southport School all the way, can record an upset at Churchie on Saturday.
If that happens, it will turn tomorrow’s other top four clash between TSS and Terrace, who both only have one loss so far, at the Gold Coast into a game which would decide who would be alongside Churchie as joint premiers for 2020.
Bruton said his team was focused on the task at hand with Churchie needing to limit the likes of State High talents Tane Kirisome, Haizyn Mellars and Wes Briggs.
“We haven’t really put a whole great game together yet, we’ve had our moments and patches but that’s it so hopefully we can put it together this weekend,” he said.
“We’ve been training even harder in the lead up to these bigger games so hopefully we can execute the game plan well.
“State High are tough, I mean, they’ve pushed everyone including Terrace right until the end so we need to be ready for the challenge.”
State High coach Kris Robinson said his team had improved every week and were focused on continuing to improve ahead of the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament later this month.
“When I returned to coaching BSHS this season, I always had a three-year plan for the program and the boys have exceeded all expectations so far in year one,” he said.
“Especially when you consider the disruptions caused by the coronavirus and injuries.
“I’m proud of the group and I’m sure they’ll rise to the challenge of competing with the unbeaten Churchie side.”
