A game-winning layup from a a club stalwart has helped the Brisbane Capitals beat the Northside Wizards in arguably the game of the season so far in the Queensland State League women’s competition.

The Wizards led by double digits several times throughout the game and held a five-point lead with just three minutes left before a late Capitals fightback from Maddie Woodford, young gun Georgia Woolley and Anna Cameron.

Going down the stretch, it was the Capitals trio who made several key baskets while Brisbane were able to contain Wizards WNBL stars Steph Reid and Courtney Woods to give themselves a chance of victory.

However, if it wasn’t for a last-minute miss from point blank range from Northside forward Regan Turnour-McCarty, which would have given the Wizards a 70-67 advantage, the Capitals would only have been able to tie the game up with a three-pointer.

But Turnour-McCarty couldn’t find the bottom of the net and Woodford made an aggressive move to the basket on the next possession, finishing a layup and earning a foul.

Woodford missed the free throw as Brisbane led 69-68 with 10 seconds left but a late game-winner from Reid was blocked as the Capitals finished with an important one-point win.

Woolley was impressive for Michael Van Dongen’s team with 25 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and was supported by Grace Champion with 16 points.

Reid and Woods both scored 18 points for the visitors.

Wizards coach Don McCarron said it was clearly a game his team should have won.

“I was out coached tonight, didn’t rotate well and we paid the price with poor decisions and slow feet in the stretch when Capials stepped it up,” he said.

“Full credit to them for weathering the storm and finding a way to win.

“Anna Cameron adds a lot of punch to the Caps and makes others around her better. We got a lesson tonight.”

In the men’s game, the home side were dominant, as Jarred Bairstow continued his hot form with a 30 point, 17 rebounds and 12 assist triple-double, to lead the Capitals to a 100-51 win.

Brisbane Bullets star Jason Cadee had 22 points and NBL teammate Cameron Goldfinch had 14 points.

For the Wizards men, Fraser Lowrie topscored with nine points.

Northside coach Nick Roberts said it was always going to be a tough challenge against last year’s QBL champions.

“We knew going into the game that it was going to be a tough assignment playing QBL champs, but this whole season for Wizards is about 2021,” Roberts said.

“We are looking to see who can compete at the next level and what is required for the club to make the next step.

“We’re searching for some consistency week in and week out and still trying to fit some new pieces to the group.”
