A battery station just outside Lismore could power more than 15,000 homes and deliver hundreds of jobs to the region in a bid to boost Australia’s renewable energy supply.

Developer GMR Energy has put forward a proposal, valued at more than $30 million, for a 28.6ha battery energy storage system at Auckram Rd, McKee’s Hill.

The proposed site sits on a rural patch of land, approximately 12 km southwest of Lismore town centre and 13km east of Casino.

Battery energy storage is a renewable and flexible form of energy. It can store power during times of low demand and release this energy when consumption spikes.

According to planning documents, the battery system would store approximately 200MWh of electricity and have the capacity to power more than 15,000 homes.

“(The battery station would optimise) energy use in peak periods, particularly in a time of change when Australia begins to experience shortages due to population growth and coal fired power station closures,” GMR Energy state.

“(The proposed energy plant also) improves the stability and reliability of the electricity network by storing energy during periods of low demand … and dispatching energy during periods of peak demand and emergency events.”

The proposed battery system would also provide “social and economic benefits”, primarily through employment opportunities which 200 new jobs slated for construction period, the plans state.

If approved, the battery storage system is expected to run for twenty years and will be used to supply electricity to the national market during peak periods.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 2026.
