A CONTROLLED burn by firefighters has sent large plumes of smoke rising over Burleigh Heads this morning.
Queensland Fire & Emergency Services confirmed the hazard reduction burn had started on Tanjenong Place and did not pose any risk to residents.

They warned smoke may affect surrounding areas.
Photos taken from nearby suburbs show the fire can be seen as far away as Varsity Lakes.

It comes as emergency services including two fire crews arrive on scene at a balcony fire in Surfers Paradise.
The fire started on the 7th floor of a Cavill Avenue tower.
No one was injured in the incident, which was extinguished by overhead sprinklers, but one woman is being treated for smoke inhalation.
