A bouncer who witnessed the incident last night told the Bulletin there were chaotic scenes on the street.

“I heard someone came out of a bar, there was a confrontation and the next minute they got stabbed,” he said.

“And I saw coppers running down the road - I have never seen so many cops running. Pretty much everyone in that Surfers police station ran off down the road, would have been 10 plus, 15 plus police.”

South Eastern Police Regional Crime Coordinator, Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said police were appealing for witnesses with photos or footage of the incident to come forward.

In an appeal to the public at 1am on Thursday, Det Supt Smith said according to witnesses the stabbing occurred after an earlier incident between two groups known to each other.

“From what we have been able to ascertain so far both groups are known to each other and there was some sort of incident that happened slightly beforehand that has led to this person being stabbed,” he said

The nature of the initial run-in between the groups was unknown, he said.

“No not clear. But we can clearly see on CCTV footage that at least two people were carrying two large knives … I suppose you would call them like hunting style knives,” he alleged.

“You would call them a Rambo knife almost, it was that sort of style.

“We are looking for anyone who might have seen it to come forward. Looking for people who saw it come forward, in this day and age everyone has a mobile phone. I’m sure someone videoed it. We would be keen to speak to those people come forward and get some footage.”

The incident was the second alleged stabbing in Surfers Paradise in 24 hours, after police yesterday charged a 17-year-old girl following the stabbing of a man early on Wednesday morning.

Police will allege the Marsden girl used a small knife, believed to be a pocket knife or switchblade to stab the man multiple times in his torso.

It’s alleged the 30-year-old man and his male friend were walking through Cavill Street Mall when a confrontation took place between the pair and the teen around 4am.

The man was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment for his serious injuries, while the teen will face Southport Children’s Court late this month.
