A young Redlands man charged alongside two others with attempting to carjack five motorists while armed and travelling in an allegedly stolen vehicle will argue he has no case to answer, a court has heard.

Cleveland man Gethyn Graham Thomas Lougher, 24, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, June 25.

He is facing five charges of attempted robbery with actual violence while armed and in company, and a charge of masking or disguising his face with intent to commit an indictable offence.

No pleas have been entered.

All offences were allegedly committed on April 6 last year, while Mr Lougher and two co-defendants were travelling in an allegedly stolen utility.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Marie Griffiths told the court the charges related to an alleged “crime spree” that occurred over the space of about 45 minutes.

“The three offenders… made attempts to carjack five individual vehicles with occupants inside,” she said.

“It’s alleged they [the co-defendants] were armed, and occupants of the vehicles were assaulted during that time also.”

This masthead previously reported the alleged attempted carjackings occurred at Southport, Main Beach, and Surfers Paradise.

Mr Lougher’s charges were set down for a committal hearing on Wednesday, but Senior Constable Griffiths told the court the brief of evidence had gone missing while in transit from Cleveland to Southport.

She said she was having to re-compile the brief “in its entirety,” which involved reviewing a substantial quantity of CCTV material.

Mr Lougher’s defence lawyer Sarah Pascoe opposed any adjournment of the matter, noting the length of time that had elapsed since her client was charged.

She said issues with the brief had been known about “since March”.

Magistrate Jane Bentley said she would “reluctantly” grant one last adjournment, with the committal hearing relisted for July 23.

The court heard Ms Pascoe would be arguing her client had no case to answer at the upcoming hearing. The court was not told on what basis such a submission would be made.

In May, one of Mr Lougher’s co-defendant’s, Capalaba man Ethan James Davies, 19, pleaded guilty to five charges of aggravated armed robbery, for which he was ordered to serve a maximum of four years’ imprisonment.
