CAV’S Steakhouse butchery has tantalised the tastebuds of Gold Coasters for decades with their famous rib eye steak.
Now Bulletin readers have officially named the Labrador institution as the best Gold Coast butchery.
Richard Cavill opened Cav’s steakhouse, which famously has a fake cow out the front, in 1984 and then an adjoining purpose-built butchery in 2004.

He told the Bulletin he was originally cutting steak on-site but inspiration from America sparked the establishment of a purpose-built butchery.
“In the 90s we were cutting all the steak for the restaurant and using the trimmings for the steak pies.
VOTE FOR THE GOLD COAST’S BEST BURGER
“But then we opened the butchery and now the public can walk in and buy everything on Cav’s steakhouse menu fresh to take home.
“We are so thankful for our clients – they are our lives.
“We know all our regulars by name and we try to deliver our products with love, care and patience.”
Labrador’s Cav’s Steakhouse beat strong competition from Paradise Point Butchery and Seafood, Southern Cross Organic Butcher, Nobbys Beach Gourmet Meats and Salt & Co Dry-Aged Gourmet Meats.
Cav’s Steakhouse butchery store manager Russel Jones said he was “surprised” the store claimed the top spot.

“We just love the butchery and our clients and this is just the icing on the cake,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone who voted.”
The steakhouse and butchery will close mid-year for redevelopment but Mr Cavill said they would “come back bigger and better and will be ready to fire up for the Gold Coast with
more efficiency”.
Staff from Southern Cross Organic Butcher in Highland Park were ecstatic they got third place because they were “a long way from home”.
“Our story is a bit different to most Gold Coast butchers,” owner Alfred Smith said.
“We were originally from Murwillumbah but after cyclone Debbie we lost our shop.
“We relocated to the Coast two-and-a-half years ago and we have love every moment.
“We are known for our old fashioned service with a smile and we love our clients.”
In country NSW Alfred Smith worked in abattoirs and butcheries from the age of 15.
Now the 35-year-old has his own butchery and said he loved his job “more than ever” and encourages other people to get into the trade.
“We just encourage everyone to come to Alexander Drive and check us out, especially sausages.”
