Gold Coast police speaking to driver after he crashed into light rail at Southport, resulting in suspension of services

A car and tram carriage have ended up with extensive damage after a head-on. Police are talking to the driver.

Police are speaking to a man who allegedly crashed a Mitsubishi Lancer into a light rail carriage, bringing trams to a shuddering halt.

Emergency services were called after the collision on Scarborough and Short streets at Southport just before 9.20pm on Tuesday.

Queensland Police officers have been investigating whether the 60-year-old man committed a traffic offence before he crashed the vehicle into the tram, a spokeswoman said.

The front of the car and the tram were noticeably damaged after the head-on collision.

Police have been reviewing CCTV footage to determine how the occurred.

Trams travelling north and southbound were suspended between Southport and Surfers Paradise North stations for half an hour.

Buses were running between the stations for those impacted by the suspension of services.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics attended but the man did not need to be taken to hospital for treatment, according to a statement.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services was also called after the crash, but not needed.

Incidents involving cars and other vehicles travelling on tram tracks are not uncommon on the Gold Coast, despite signs warning drivers to steer well clear.

Previous incidents have often been attributed to intoxication or dodgy driving, including performing illegal U-turns.

On June 12, a 23-year-old man allegedly drove a car onto tram tracks while drunk and lodged the vehicle on the line on the Sundale Bridge at Southport.

Almost two months later, on August 9, a 26-year-old man allegedly lost control of a car while drunk, mounted a median strip, and landed on tram tracks on the Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach
