Gold Coast police believe the 21-year-old woman was a passenger in the stolen Mazda 2 when it slammed into the tree on Markeri St and Rio Vista Blvd at Mermaid Waters about 7.20am.

It’s alleged the theft of the car occurred about 6am, shortly after the 39-year-old worker parked her Mazda 2 in the car park of Nerang Fair Shopping Centre on Beaudesert-Nerang Road at Nerang.

Queensland Ambulance and Queensland Police have been at the scene of the Mermaid Waters crash.

The teen “threatened the woman with a knife” and “demanded her car keys before the pair fled in the stolen car”, a statement read.

It’s alleged the Mazda 2 then collided with bushes and a light pole about 20 minutes down the road, though emergency services initially advised the vehicle hit a tree.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics treated the Coomera teen alleged to be behind the wheel for a leg injury.

She was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

It comes as Coast police investigate the circumstances surrounding a car with no number plates found ablaze on Wheeler Crescent at Currumbin Waters early Thursday morning.

Queensland Police officers swarmed the car park of Harbour Town shopping centre about 9am on Wednesday after the 13-year-old Currumbin boy and 15-year-old Labrador boy were allegedly found to be inside the Mercedes stolen from a Coast suburb.

It’s understood a member of the public helped officers track the luxury car to Harbour Town after it was first spotted on the Smith Street Motorway at Southport about half an hour earlier.

It’s alleged the stolen car was blocked by police when it was driven into the car park and the boys were pulled from the vehicle.

The 13-year-old boy has now been charged with four counts of burglary, three counts of possessing tainted property and one count each of possessing drug utensils or pipes, possessing a knife and unlawful use of a vehicle.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with one count each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving unlicensed and possessing drug utensils or pipes.

The younger boy was expected to face Southport Children’s Court this morning, while the older boy was due to face the court on May 19, according to a police spokeswoman.

However, the youths cannot be identified under Queensland law.

The alleged offending comes amid a string of serious youth crime incidents and alleged criminal activity on the Coast in recent times, including assaults, burglaries and vehicle thefts.

Meanwhile, Gold Coast police were on Thursday morning hoping to speak to the owner of the car found on fire at Currumbin Waters overnight.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) was called to Wheeler Crescent, near Villiers Dr, about 2.30am and found the fire “well involved”.

It took firefighters about 25 minutes to extinguish the blaze and QFES left the scene in the hands of police officers, who planned to speak to the vehicle’s owner.

Car fires on the Coast have recently been linked to stolen vehicles dumped by offenders.
