A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Gold Coast, while multiple roads remain closed due to flash flooding.

As at 4pm on Wednesday, eight roads across the Gold Coast region were closed due to flooding. Those include Birds Rd at Maudsland, Clagiraba Rd at Clagiraba, Ruffles Rd and Hotham Creek Rd at Willow Vale, Alberta Park Rd at Luscombe, Bonogin Rd at Bonogin/Mudgeeraba, and Piggotts Rd and Tarata Rd at Guanaba.

The road closure update came after an 11.40am thunderstorm warning from the Bureau of Meteorology including heavy rainfall and flash flooding near Mudgeeraba, Nerang, Springbrook and the Scenic Rim locality of Moogerah.

Emergency services are calling for Gold Coast residents to not drive unless necessary.

“Park their car undercover and away from trees,” a BOM statement said.

“Close doors and windows.

“Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.

“Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.

“Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.”

The Bureau of Meteorology also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for more heavy rainfall for parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts at 3.28pm.

It comes as southeast Queensland remains on high alert after Brisbane was battered by rain on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Wivenhoe Dam’s floodgates were opened for the first time in two years as Queensland braced for its wettest December since the 2011 floods.
