Mexican Hoon Cartel does burnout in front of Councillor Hermann Vorster's office

A CITY councillor is living in fear after his home and office were targeted by hoons.

Cr Hermann Vorster, who has spoken out against the so-called Mexican Hoon Cartel in the past, has accused the group of being responsible for burnouts and taunting him at his family home.

The group has uploaded a video to social media of a number of members doing a burnout in front of his Robina office.

In the video, posted four days ago, a member from the cartel gets out of the boot, stands on top of the car and jumps on it as its tyres spin and smoke on the concrete paving for over a minute in front of Cr Vorster’s office at the Robina Community Centre.

The video, titled “Councillor Hermann Vorster’s Easter Special’’, finishes with a message: “The cartel is lurking.”

But despite the hoons’ dangerous actions that torment not only the councillor but other drivers and pedestrians, police have not made any recent arrests or charged anyone.

MEXICAN HOON CARTEL ON GOLD COAST TAUNT POLICE WITH LATEST VIDEOS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Cr Vorster told the Bulletin he believed he was being targeted because of his “zero tolerance” of hooning in his division of Robina and Varsity Lakes.

“Not only are they doing burnouts out the front of my office, they are posting videos of burnouts in and around my home,” Cr Vorster said.

“They are targeting me personally in videos on YouTube.

“I have demonstrated a zero tolerance approach. I can only imagine that’s put a lot of pressure on them and their members.”

He said he had taken safety concerns to police, and the cartel was “lashing out’’.

“I have raised concerns of my own personal safety with police and city officers about them,’’ he said.

“I now feel this is a credible threat to the safety of a politician.

“It’s time for a more serious approach of dealing with the perpetrators.”

In recent months 49 new CCTV cameras had been installed in the Varsity Lakes area, with a total now of 52 monitoring the busiest roads.

“Those cameras record in ultra high definition 24 hours a day, seven days a week and keep a recording for 28 days,” he said.

“I work with the residents along the main roads to alert me when they hear the evidence of hooning.

“I then take the dates and time and provide them to our officers who then go and retrieve them and pass it on for prosecution.”

The Mexican Hoon Cartel’s Facebook page was shut down in August last year after police reported the page.

Soon after, their YouTube channel and Instagram account were removed — but they were posting from a new account in September.
