A TEENAGER wore a clown wig, red underwear and dark sunglasses in an “amateur” attempt to rob a Kirra 7-Eleven with a flick knife, a court has been told.

Police had to draw a firearm to stop Zye Allen, 18, fleeing on a push bike with the knife stuffed in his underwear after the attempted armed robbery, about 7.10m on Anzac Day, it has been alleged in the Southport Magistrates Court.

The car wash worker was allegedly so intoxicated and unsteady on his feet that the retail worker did not give Allen the cigarettes he demanded while brandishing a 25cm knife.

“The retail attendant did not feel overly threatened by the defendant due to his intoxication level, unsteadiness on his feet and behind his security screen,” documents tendered to the court read.

Allen, who turned 18 earlier this month, was granted bail in the Southport Magistrates Court where he faces charges of attempted armed robbery and going armed to cause fear.

The court was told the 7-Eleven worker called police who arrived at the scene to find Allen allegedly trying to get away on a pushbike.

Court documents said Senior Constable Nicholas White saw the knife sticking out of Allen’s red underwear before Allen pulled out the knife and waved it towards police.

“At this time, Sen Const White has been in fear of this weapon and presented his firearm as a use of force towards the defendant,” the documents said.

“Sen Const White has yelled commands to the defendant to let go of the knife and to get to the ground.”

The knife has been described as a gold flick knife, about 25cm long, including the blade and handle.

Documents allege Allen continued to move towards police until he was told a second time to get to the ground.

Defence lawyer Dave Garratt, of Howden Saggers Lawyers, said if the attempted robbery had happened two weeks earlier Allen would be in the children’s court.

He said the retail worker did not feel threatened.

Magistrate Mark Howden said Allen needed to realise things were much more serious now he was an adult.

“If you are going to do things like you did its going to be a lot more difficult to get bail,” he said.

Magistrate Howden described it as an “amateur” armed robbery attempt.

He granted bail on the condition Allen reside in Bilinga and report to police three times a week.

The matter was adjourned until May 14
