ONE of Australia’s leading accommodation providers has unveiled plans for a new Gold Coast hotel aimed at the lucrative business market.
Accor Group is moving ahead with its proposal to build a hotel on the old Gold Coast Hospital site in Southport, more than two years after a preliminary concept was given the green light by council as part of the $500 million Queen Street Village development.
The company had originally pitched a 12-storey hotel to council but now want it to have an extra five levels.
According to detailed plans submitted to council late last week, it will be operated as a Mercure hotel and will have 230 rooms.
“This is a perfect location for a hotel aimed directly at the business traveller,” a report to councillors said.

First look at new Palm Beach tower
“Rooms either overlook the Central Plaza or Nerang Street. At roof level there is a pool, a sun terrace and a covered food and beverage outlet. Mercure expect this will be a very popular
function space.”
The project was originally advertised as having an opening day of late 2019 but ground works have only begun on the site in recent weeks.
The new application to council has also requested the opening hours of the rooftop bar be extended to allow operation from 7am to 1am.
The old hospital site will ultimately feature seven towers ranging from 16-25 storeys, a shopping centre and a $120m two-tower retirement facility.
