TWO Gold Coast public schools have topped the state’s OP results in a major coup.
The latest results released today by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) show Benowa State High School and Tamborine Mountain State High School outranked more than 500 other high schools across the state in the 2019 Year 12 results.
At Benowa State High School, 72.7 per cent of students under the university-grading system received an OP between one and five. Eleven students overall got an OP score.
In 2019, the school had a population of 1894 students.
THE BIGGEST NAMES IN EDUCATION ON THE GOLD COAST
It is understood a majority of senior students who were not graded under the OP system chose to partake in the International Baccalaureate, an alternate, internationally recognised university grading system.
At Tamborine Mountain State High School, 16 of the 29 students (55.2 per cent) who obtained an OP scored between one and five.
It was followed by All Saints Anglican School (40.3 per cent) and Southport State High School (38.5 per cent).
GOLD COAST STUDENTS NAMED THE SMARTEST IN THE STATE
Southport State High School senior school principal Benjamin Weeks said the school was equally proud of their graduates with OP results and those who achieved some 350 VET Qualifications in a variety of fields.
This includes the 60 students who graduated with a diploma-level qualification.
“These results can only be achieved through a team approach; students, teachers and their families working together,” Mr Weeks said.
“We have built a culture of high expectations and our students all work incredibly hard to do the very best they can, to ensure that they meet their individual goals.
“All of our students are monitored and tracked extensively to ensure that they are on the right pathway and receiving individualised and tailored support.
“Our exceptional results are a credit to each and every member of our school community.”
Schools with fewer than 10 students to receive an OP were not included in this analysis.
The 2019 student cohort will be the last class of Queensland students to receive an OP score, with the state moving to Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks from this year – in line with other states.
