IT was a groundshed year in the history of the Gold Coast’s big motorsport race weekend: 2005 — the year the fun police banned boobs on balconies.
Scantily-clad women had become a regular fixture on balconies in the Surfers Paradise race precinct after the first recorded flashing incident in 1997, when a woman on the sixth-floor balcony of the Quarterdeck apartments dared to bare her chest to the delight of alcohol-fuelled racefans.

Indy flashers on high rise balconies were soon a fixture of the annual race carnival, increasing in number until the fun police finally caved in to complaints and cracked down on bawdy behaviour.
The blitz was prompted when two Australian Army helicopter pilots were suspended for waving a “show us your tits” banner when they flew through the Surfers Paradise race precinct in 2004.

The bare chests had been difficult to police — by the time police knocked on doors to arrest Indy flashers, the topless offenders had put their clothes back on.
While high-rise balconies have remained relatively “breast-free” since, it’s a different story inside apartments.
Adult entertainer Regan Slayter said bikini girls and topless waitresses were still a big part of many racegoers’ weekend.
“This is my favourite event,” she said.

“Guys do complain about the fact they can’t have us girls there but we are very active on track and off track.
“The GC600 is still a popular event for the Gold Coast and adult entertainment is still alive and hopping — even though it’s now a family event.
“We respect that and so behind closed doors, the adult entertainers are still working with bikini girls, topless waitresses and shows around the clock.
“If you come to the GC600 you can still book the entertainers for behind closed doors.”
A diehard car lover, Ms Slayter has been working at the Coast race weekend since the 2008 — the final year of IndyCar racing in the streets of Surfers Paradise.

“I grew up a car lover — I’ve had two Toranas, a Gemini and an HG Premier drag car,” she said.
When she’s not working during race weekend, she’s glued to the action on track.
“Some of the regulars who have been going to the race since Indy book girls from Friday to Sunday during the race,” she said.
“While the race is going, we’re serving drinks and performing shows.”
Ms Slayter works both independently and through local agencies.
“We all work together and help each other out,” she said.
The Gold Coast 600 runs from October 19-21.
