Gold Coast 600: Airforce fly over vision

THE newest business on the Gold Coast 600 track is gearing up for a loud debut as one of the few venues inside the Surfers Paradise motor race precinct.

While the Orr family’s Rhapsody Beachside cafe and restaurant quietly opened its doors four months ago, it is already making plenty of noise with locals and visitors.

Jennifer Orr, her husband and their 20-year-old son moved to the Gold Coast from Canberra to open the licensed venue on the ground floor of the Rhapsody Resort in Surfers Paradise Boulevard.

The resort, which sits on the hairpin turn at the southern end of the GC600 track, offers some of the best views on offer during GC600 race weekend.

“I was here for the race last year,” Mrs Orr said.

“It was very exciting. I was invited by Rhapsody management to watch the race from the resort building up on Level 41 and Level 27.

“It was fantastic to see the cars coming down the street and around the bend and hear the ‘explosions’. We were very much a part of the whole affair.”

This year, Ms Orr and her family will have their feet firmly planted on the ground as the venue’s core staff of 15 and a team of casuals work around the clock to cater for race fans.

“We’ve already had lots of people in the building asking about catering,” said Ms Orr.

“It’s going to be loud but we’re going to have to deal with it. The people sharing our space will all be interested in the race.”

The venue serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and dinner from Thursdays to Sundays, with a menu that includes organic fair trade coffee, gluten free and vegetarian options and Insta-worthy dinner dishes such as Rockhampton eye fillet and Harissa-coated prawns.

Ms Orr added that the cafe was working on a special race weekend menu.

Customers will also be able to order ahead using a downloadable Rhapsody Beachside app.

Ms Orr said the venue planned to “step things up” to promote its arrival on the scene after race weekend.
