TENS of thousands of people flocked to the Broadwater Parklands to get their fill of dagwood dogs and fairy floss, before braving the sideshow alley.
The weather turned it on for the public holiday for the 113th Gold Coast Show, despite early fears rain would dampen the mood.
Not surprisingly the showbags were flying off the shelf, with the Bertie Beetles bag the most popular and confirming fears they could sell out.
Showtime Showbags Owner Mitchell Peers said they are expecting to sell out of some bags by lunchtime today, with 10,000 bags sold on day one.
“It’s been crazy, absolutely crazy, we’re well and truly up on where we were last year,” Mr Peers said.
“Looks like we’re going to start running out of some bags, I think we’re going to run out of Bertie Beetles.

“They’ve been the biggest seller today, along with Warheads in the confectionary, and the novelty bags, Unicorns and Harry Potter have been absolutely crazy. We didn’t have a lot of the Stranger Things, but they were gone by 11am.
“We’ll start selling out of some about lunch time tomorrow, once they’re gone, they’re gone, every bag we’ve got is on site.”

Gold Coast Show CEO Lavinia Rampino said the turnout on day one was extremely successful, with people stretched across the 4km long Broadwater Parkland, from the equestrian event to the sideshow.
“It’s been crazy busy, I’ve been here all day and it’s been a fantastic day, the weather held out and the crowd is just unbelievable,” Ms Rampino said.
“It’s a much longer stretch than last year so it’s hard to tell if there’s more people, but there’s definitely a lot of people here and the carparks have been full quite a few times and we didn’t have that last year.
COMPLETE LIST OF GOLD COAST SHOW’S SHOWBAGS
“By Sunday afternoon we’ll have an indication on whether the numbers are higher than last year because we’ll get information from various things such as TransLink and sign holders.”
Although a local, Carly Dove said this year was the first time she and daughter Jemima, 5, had been to the show.
“It’s a really great spot for it, it’s so nice and cool because inland you don’t get the breeze.”
For others though, purchasing an annual showbag is what the day is all about, with Kat Wicking, 7, getting to choose from over 100 varieties.
WHAT IT’S LIKE TO RIDE SHOW’S BIGGEST RIDE
“My favourite part of the show is the showbags!” she said.
“I got the mermaid one because it has so much stuff in it and you get a whole new bag.”
However, with the popularity of showbags growing so too are the queues.
Mother of four-year-old Brigitte, Porche Degenhardt, said the showbag queues aren’t for people who lack patience.
“We had to wait nearly half an hour for our showbags, but not everyone in there is as patient,” Ms Degenhardt said.
The show continues through to 9pm Sunday.
