Private schools on the Gold Coast may have secured the higher total scores for NAPLAN, but public primary schools are also proving to be winners when it comes to grammar, writing, reading, numeracy and spelling.

Do our schools need NAPLAN?

PRIVATE schools on the Gold Coast may have secured higher total scores for NAPLAN, but public primary schools are also proving to be winners when it comes to individual subjects.

An analysis of the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) found Gold Coast public primary schools made the top five for each subject.

However, private schools dominated high school subjects, the only exception being Varsity College, which made the top five for Year 9 spelling.

The assessment which took place in May for year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students tested them on grammar, writing, reading, numeracy and spelling.

In Year 3 scores, Currumbin Valley State School students ranked highest on the Gold Coast for reading, pipping private school rivals The Southport School, AB Paterson College, Emmanuel College and St Hilda’s School.
