Gold Coast development: First look at $35m revamp of Surfers Paradise Marriott

One of the Gold Coast’s best-known hotels will get a $35 million luxury revamp which will dramatically alter its look and bring in a whole host of new features.

MORE than $35 million will be spent revamping one of the Gold Coast’s best-known hotels.

The Surfers Paradise Marriott will be rebranded as the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort and Spa and will undergo a major renovation which will reposition it as high-end luxury accommodation.

Demolition works have begun on several floors of the tower to expand and revamp the hotel rooms, with construction set to be completed by Christmas.

Under plans unveiled on Thursday morning, the Marriott will be retargeted for the luxury market.

“The opening will signal the continued expansion of our luxury footprint in Australia as we continue to see strong demand within the luxury travel segment here. The JW Marriott brand, with its distinctive luxury philosophy, will resonate with these travellers, who seek exceptional, thoughtfully-crafted services and experiences.”

Gold Coast-based firm DBI, which was the original designer of the Marriott, was brought in to re-imagine the tower.

While the tropical design of the building’s foyer will remain, the guest rooms will be given a facelift.

A new Japanese Whisky bar will also open.

Destination Gold Coast chief executive Annaliese Battista said the project would deliver a boost to the city at the beginning of the critical summer season.

“This is a welcome announcement and we look forward with great anticipation to JW Marriott’s signature luxury brand debuting in Australia’s favourite playground at the height of summer,” she said.

“A first for Australia and the Gold Coast, this investment reflects confidence in our region’s buoyant tourism market after having endured a time of significant disruption.

“The property will add a new layer of sophistication to our accommodation offering, appealing to high-spending travellers seeking luxurious stays on the Gold Coast – a market that is currently under-served.”
