An upscale chicken restaurant whose motto was to “keep it simple”, has suddenly closed down after only two years of trading.

Southport’s Bird Royale chicken restaurant was placed into voluntary liquidation on October 9.

The venue, which featured charcoal chicken as its culinary centrepiece, was owned by Gold Coast hospitality boss Dave Galvin.

Mr Galvin said they had experienced “tough trading conditions” and “didn’t want to further the lease”.

“We felt is wasn’t necessary or sustainable to have a shop presence,” he said.

Mr Galvin, who owns another four local bars and restaurants, said Bird Royale would continue trading as a catering business.

“We love the brand still and the team will be focusing on growing our catering business,” he said.

“We are not saying goodbye to our local customers.

“We look forward to receiving the same amazing support from our customers as we have for the past few years.”

In a report lodged with ASIC, Mr Galvin said his company owed more than $1.1 million to creditors.

The list includes the ATO, which is owed $160,000 and a landlord, Nexus, which is owed $68,893.

On October 10, the Bird Royale restaurant was locked up with a sign on the door which said “closing early for maintenance, apologies”.

All Bird Royale social media pages were inactive on October 10 but the website was still live.

Mr Galvin opened the venue in December 2022 as the “Gold Coast’s only charcoal chicken shop”.

“Bird Royale has perfected the art and takes the humble rotisserie chook to a delicious level,” the website said.

Mr Galvin also owns Kirra Beach House, Biggera Waters sports bar Crafty’s, Broadbeach bar Kost and Southport Italian restaurant Mozza Mozza.
