A $400m, 53-storey third tower starts construction today at the Star Entertainment Group’s Broadbeach site, heralding Australia’s first Dorsett hotel.

The Dorsett, which will have 300 rooms to make it the second biggest in visitor hub Broadbeach behind The Star Grand, will also have 423, one and two-bedroom apartments.

It will take the overall supply at the Star Gold Coast’s island site to 1400 rooms, with new restaurants and bars also planned for the third tower.

The third tower — part of Star’s $2 billion masterplan which foresees seven towers in total at the site — will create 1800 construction jobs.

A further 500 people will be employed once operational, taking the Star Gold Coast workforce from 2400 to 2900.

A further four towers — standing at 52, 54, 65 and 74 storeys — have been earmarked for the site, the Gold Coast Bulletin has previously revealed. Each new tower will have a “hero” pool plus food and beverage venues with a proposed timetable of one new tower every two years.

The start of the Dorsett tower construction comes five months after completion of the site’s second tower, The Darling, home to rooftop bar and restaurant 19, operated by Gold Coast hospitality dream team Simon Gloftis and Billy Cross.

The Star Entertainment Group chairman John O’Neill, on the Gold Coast and joined by Queenland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to mark breaking ground on the 4.5-star Dorsett, said: “We are delighted to further enhance the tourism appeal of the Gold Coast and southeast Queensland more generally with this latest joint venture development.

“Together with our partners we have, in progress or planning, projects that will see our investment across Brisbane and the Gold Coast exceed $4.5 billion.

“This latest commitment showcases the confidence we have in the future of the Coast and its potential to become an even more established primary location for intrastate, interstate and international visitors,” Mr O’Neill said.

“The Star Gold Coast has been transformed over the past three years, and continues to evolve, with levels of investment that position us as a genuine global tourism destination.”

Mr O’Neill said the introduction of a Dorsett would bring increased awareness in the global market, especially Asia, where Dorsett Hospitality International owned and operated the majority of its 54 hotels.

“When the Dorsett opens for business around early 2022, it will ensure we have two of the largest hotels on the Gold Coast — plus the most luxurious in The Darling suite hotel,” he said.

“Overall, we will have the finest resort amenities, additional food and beverage venues to complement the award-winning restaurants and bars already opened, and entertainment offerings that include leading Australian and international acts at The Star Gold Coast theatre.” The Star Entertainment Group managing director Queensland Geoff Hogg said: “We were delighted to open The Darling in time for the Commonwealth Games and now to progress just a few months later to breaking ground for the Dorsett hotel and apartment tower highlights our commitment to tourism and the region.”

Destination Gold Coast Consortium — a joint venture between The Star Entertainment Group and Hong Kon-based partners Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium — will develop the third tower.

It continues the three giants’ multibillion-dollar investments for mega projects at Queen’s Wharf Brisbane and Sydney.

The joint venture also has the Sheraton Grand Mirage beachfront resort on the Gold Coast.
