A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder after police allege he stabbed another teen in a “horrific and violent” Easter Show brawl earlier this year.
The boy and two other men, aged 18, were all charged with murder this week after 17-year-old Uati “Pele” Faletolu died in a stabbing on April 11.
Faletolu was working as a ride attendant in the carnival ride section of the show when the brawl broke out.
Police caught the two 18-year-old men and 14-year-old boy this week, charging each of them with murder following a lengthy police investigation under Strike Force Calle where detectives were met with a “wall of silence”.
However, police today said they would allege in court the youngest boy was the person to have stabbed Faletolu.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Jason Weinstein said the boys were all known to each other prior to the attack, which they allege may have been motivated by gang or postcode links.
“We will say that they do have knowledge of each other,” he said.
“Some of the individuals have some links to certain areas.”
Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the investigation was difficult, due to the fact that the young men involved were not willing to speak or cooperate with police.
“Witnesses have not been cooperating with police and we have seen people who have not wanted to speak at all on the situation,” he said.
“Police have spent hundreds of hours going through CCTV footage looking at social media footage and iPhones to be able to lay these charges.”
Faletolu was working as a ride attendant at the show when he was stabbed during the brawl.
He died on the way to hospital leaving behind a girlfriend and his unborn child.
Another teenager stabbed in the brawl survived his stab wounds.
Police on Friday arrested a 14-year-old boy in Arndell Park, who was taken to Blacktown Police Station and charged with murder.
He is set to face a children’s court on Saturday.
It comes after homicide detectives arrested an 18-year-old man in Shalvey last Saturday who was charged with murder and refused bail to appear before a children’s court July 18.
On Wednesday another 18-year-old was arrested at Schofields Train Station and charged with murder.
He was refused bail and will appear at Burwood Local Court September 7.
“From the outset police were met with a wall of silence from associates of those involved and undertook a painstaking investigative process to reach this point,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Jason Weinstein said.
“This and other recent acts of knife crime that we’ve seen were senseless acts of violence which have had devastating consequences for victims, their families, and also those allegedly responsible,” he said.
“I implore young persons to think carefully about their choices and the consequences of carrying or using a knife and encourage parents to speak with their children about the dangers associated with it. I don’t want to see other families devastated like this.”
