Teens who witnessed Easter Show murder refuse to talk to police

More than three weeks after a teenage boy was fatally stabbed at the Easter Show, NSW Police have yet to arrest anyone- but claim those who saw the incident are refusing to help investigators.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb and her deputy Dave Hudson have been grilled in state parliament over the fatal Easter Show stabbing of a teenage boy, saying his friends were refusing to help detectives.

The state’s two most senior cops faced questions from shadow police spokesman Walt Secord in Budget Estimates on Wednesday over the alleged murder of Uati “Pele” Faletolu over which police still have not arrested anyone more than three weeks on.

This is despite the attack happening in front of hundreds of people, some of whom were filming.

“It’s a tragedy. It’s (now) the focus of the homicide investigation and it’s very much live and ongoing investigation that hopefully we will see a resolution to,’’ Ms Webb said.

The death of the young father-to-be is part of the “postcode’’ street gang wars raging in parts of western Sydney.

“(It’s frustrating) given the crowds and what’s been said publicly about the lack of co-operation, especially from a cohort of young people,’’ Ms Webb said.

Deputy Commissioner David Hudson said it was his friends who could provide information for a breakthrough but were not helping.

“There is a frustration in relation to people not willing, who are associated with the deceased, in assisting us. But we are working through that,’’ said Mr Hudson.

“I’m quite confident we will get to the line, it’s going to take some time, it’s one of those complex matters where we don’t have witnesses forthcoming.”

A number of teenagers who were at the scene when the teenager was stabbed are refusing to be interviewed.

Detectives are poring through hundreds of hours of footage from social media to see if they can gather the identity of the killer.

Investigators are convinced a clear image of the killer is on someone’s phone.

“Of the vision we have already reviewed, we know there was a significant amount of people filming the incident, many of whom have not yet supplied the vision to police,’’ said Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, head of the NSW Homicide Squad has said previously.
