Specialist homicide detectives have taken over the Easter Show murder case because none of the many witnesses involved in the fatal melee, or those who filmed it, have provided the killer’s identity to police.
Neither side of the fight, which claimed the life of teenager Uati Faletolu on April 11, are understood to be co-operating with police.
Homicide squad boss Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said associates might not be co-operating “due to either misguided loyalties or fear of retribution”.
Police do have grainy vision of the fight and are convinced someone has a clear depiction of the killer.
“Of the vision we have already reviewed, we know there was a significant amount of people filming the incident, many of whom have not yet supplied the vision to police,” Det Supt Doherty said.
“In our experience, it is likely that someone – or many people – has unknowingly captured a clear shot of something of relevance to the investigation.”
He is confident the killer can be identified and brought to justice over the horrific event which unfolded in front of stunned families at the Show. Police believe the fight may have extended from the bloody feuds between the postcode gangs of Western Sydney.
“We’ve brought people to justice in the past and we will bring those responsible for this stabbing to justice, but we need the support of the community,” Det Supt O’Doherty said.
Uati, 17, was connected to a Doonside gang known as 67 which is in constant battle with a Mt Druitt gang, Ready for Anything.
A boy, aged 15, was arrested at the scene and charged over his alleged involvement in the brawl.
The call for assistance comes as Uati’s mother broke her silence, saying she was “heartbroken” but wanted her son to be remembered as “the beautiful person that he was”.
Janice Faletolu said the past week had been a difficult time for her family and her teenage son’s pregnant partner.
She said her family would miss her son “so much” but were intent on “cherishing every memory”.
“Uati was a happy, outgoing young man with a loving heart. He was a loyal friend, a caring brother, and a selfless son and partner,” a family member wrote on behalf of Ms Faletolu.
“Even with the tragic circumstances surrounding Uati’s passing, we as a family do not want Uati remembered as a victim but to use this time to honour and celebrate the beautiful person that he was.”
