A man has been charged after a dramatic police pursuit through Sydney’s south ended in a crash involving a bus and an SUV in Hurstville.
Detectives attempted to stop a blue ute on Forest Road just before 10.20am on Monday after spotting a man allegedly wanted for breaching his bail conditions.
Police allege the driver failed to stop when directed, prompting a pursuit through local streets. During the chase, the ute allegedly collided with a bus carrying 37 passengers and a separate SUV before coming to a stop near Bridge St.
A 71-year-old woman on the bus was taken to St George Hospital as a precaution, while three occupants of the SUV – a 28-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and a baby – were assessed by paramedics at the scene but did not require further treatment.
The driver, a 45-year-old man, allegedly fled the vehicle on foot but was quickly arrested by police. He was taken to St George Hospital for mandatory testing under police guard before being transferred to Kogarah Police Station.
He has since been charged with five offences, including police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, not give particulars to other driver, supply prohibited drug (two counts) and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.
He was also charged with breach of bail.
The man was refused bail and is expected to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.
