A man has been arrested and will be extradited to NSW after a 280km cross border chase from Sydney’s CBD to Canberra in what police allege was a stolen car.

NSW Police say the white hatchback was first spotted about 10pm Tuesday at the intersection of Cleveland and Bourke streets in Surry Hills, where officers attempted to pull it over.

Checks revealed the vehicle had allegedly been stolen from Melbourne just three days earlier.

When the driver allegedly refused to stop, the car crashed into a marked police vehicle and fled, sparking a short pursuit that was soon called off due to safety concerns.

The officer involved — a male constable — was not injured.

An hour later, the car was located on the M7 motorway, and a second pursuit began, involving multiple police districts, Highway Patrol and the Polair helicopter.

The vehicle continued south, crossing into the ACT, where local police arrested a 43-year-old man in Downer about 1am Wednesday.

He remains in custody and is expected to be extradited to NSW.

Investigations are ongoing.
