Police have charged a man and will allege he threatened a female staffer at one of the country’s top universities with a knife before fleeing the campus in Sydney’s east.

A man has been charged after allegedly threatening a female staffer at one of the country’s top universities with a knife before fleeing the campus in Sydney’s east on Wednesday.
Officers were called to the University of New South Wales in Kensington shortly before 6.20am following reports of an attempted assault.
Police were told a female member of staff was threatened by a man armed with a knife.
She had escaped without injury and reported the incident.
Following extensive inquiries, police arrested a 30-year-old man at an address on Newland Street, Bondi Junction, about 1.25pm on Wednesday.
Police also seized a knife at the scene.
The man was taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with threat inflict aggravated bodily harm on victim with intention to have sex intercourse, robbery armed with offensive weapon, common assault, stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm, aggravated break and enter with intention – armed, and destroy or damage property.
He was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Thursday.
UNSW law student from Hillsdale, Elise Yang was shocked and saddened to hear about the incident.
“I’ve never been to campus that early but it is still so scary to hear about and I hope she is okay. I had no idea, we weren’t sent any emails or texts about it, UNSW must be trying not to scare anyone,” she said.
Staff members from the UNSW gym said they saw police tape around the campus but did not hear or see anything else regarding the incident.
Campus security were unaware of the incident until asked by The Daily Telegraph.
Surrounding small businesses including cafes were also unaware of the incident.
“I’ve been here since 8am and haven’t heard or seen anything at all, must of not happened in this part of campus,” said a barista.
