Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns’ model ex spent a night in a police cell over bizarre allegations she stole thousands of dollars in cash from a feted Sydney restaurateur and damaged his bookshelf.
Fashion designer Estelita Huijer has been charged with multiple offences against eastern suburbs hospitality baron Andrew Becher, of popular venues Franca, Parlar and Armorica.
Huijer dated Daniel Johns between 2012 and 2016, and a defunct website for her self-titled brand describes her as a “visionary artisan” with a “deep passion for crafting”.
Documents tendered to Waverley Local Court on Friday describe bizarre allegations arising from an incident at Mr Becher’s Point Piper address on Thursday.
Huijer has been charged with intentional or reckless property damage and stealing from a home over allegations she wrote on Mr Becher’s bookshelf in permanent marker, then stole between $5000 and $15,000 in cash from him.
She is also charged with breaching an apprehended domestic violence order imposed for Mr Becher’s protection after a separate incident in 2023.
Huijer sobbed in the courtroom dock as Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge gave her a stern warning before granting bail.
“You breach any of these conditions, you have any contact with him again, bail will be taken off you,” Ms Milledge said.
“This constitutes a very serious breach of the order and it’s an indication that it’s escalating, and you’re becoming more desperate.”
Huijer was granted bail to reside at a Bondi Beach address, not to contact Mr Becher, report to police daily, and not enter Point Piper, Edgecliff, or Kings Cross.
She is also forbidden to consume alcohol or drugs unless prescribed and can be subjected to testing by police.
Less than 24 hours before her arrest, Huijer was seen on social media at Potts Point seafood restaurant Harry’s Singapore Chilli Crab with fellow socialite Imogen Anthony.
Outside Waverley police station, a flustered Huijer toting a $2750 Saint Laurent linen canvas bag was asked if she had any comment about the charges.
“No,” Huijer said.
“Do you have a lighter?”
Huijer said the claims had been “manipulated” and that she would defend the charges.
Multiple attempts to contact Mr Becher about the incident were unsuccessful.
In April, Huijer was selling handbags she had made out of upcycled Levi’s jeans on social media.
Huijer and Johns lived together in Dee Why and Surry Hills throughout their relationship, with the pair getting tattoos together to commemorate Johns’ solo musical debut.
In a 2015 interview with News Corp Australia, Johns described Huijer as his muse.
“Not like a Yoko thing, but I was seeking that approval,” he said at the time.
“If I am going to listen to something 10 times a day for three years, you would hope that the person that’s living in the house doesn’t mind hearing it.”
Mr Becher was the creative mind behind now-defunct Double Bay celebrity haunt Pelicano, then co-owned by Tim Holmes a Court and Sneaky Sound System musician Daimon Downey.
In a 2019 interview, Mr Becher described his Potts Point brasserie Franca as a “very comfortable and relaxed” venue with “outstanding food and exceptional service”.
Huijer will next face Downing Centre Local Court on August 14.
