THEY are one of the hottest teams in world sport after their historic Olympic win and the Australian rugby sevens women are now working on being one of the greatest.

“We want to show we are champions and that we are here to stay,” Tonegato said of the team which didn’t even exist this time four years ago.

A new-look Australian team, with just four Olympians, won the recent Oceanian tournament with the next objective round one of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai in December.

The Australian women and the Fijian men’s team are the defending series champions.

“We know we have a target on our back,” Tonegato said. “That the other teams are out to beat us.

“We are ready for that.”

The Australians have been training daily in high heat to prepare themselves for the rigours of the December 2-3 Dubai opener of the Sevens World Series.

Tonegato said the major goal for the side in 2017 is winning the Sydney leg in February with women competing alongside the mens teams at the event for the first time.

“That’s a real priority for us,’’ she said.

“We want to show the ARU that we can pull crowds, that people want to watch us.

“It’s a chance for us to prove we can also be profitable.’’
