EXTENSIBLE. Beside You, His Majesty, Star Turn, Allergic and We’re Sure, all successful at the Rosehill Gardens meeting two weeks ago, return the same venue to attempt to maintain winning momentum on Saturday.

And Labdien, Firebird Flyer, Loophole and Encostanati each finished runner-up here earlier this month and are back on Saturday trying to go one better.

The Rosehill meeting on August 13, run on a soft 7, provides punters with some strong form references for this weekend where the track surface is just into the heavy range.

BRAD DAVIDSON & SHAYNE O’CASS PREVIEW ROSEHILL ON SATURDAY

Of that winning group, Extensible ($2.30, race two), Star Turn ($3.80, race seven) and Allergic ($3.20, race eight) are favourites to record back-to-back wins.

Beside You ($8, race four), His Majesty ($7, race six) and We’re Sure ($6.50, race nine) are at generous odds despite their last start wins.

Star Turn, winner of the San Domenico Stakes last start, has been the best backed of this group in early TAB Fixed Odds betting and remains a firm $3.80 favourite for the Run To The Rose despite solid support for some of his main rivals including Mediterranean, and particularly Impending ($6 into $4.60) and El Divino ($8 to $5). The most favoured of the runner-up group to make amends today is Firebird Flyer ($3.50, race 1).

The best backed runner all day today is the Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott galloper Evacuation, who has firmed from $3 to $2.30 after some big bets including a substantial wager of $8,000 at $2.50.

PRICE CHECK

Ruling Dynasty (race eight) ran a blinder first-up when he ran on strongly for a close third to Marenostro in the Winter Challenge over 1500m. He came back slightly in trip and didn’t have the speed in his legs second-up when ninth to Testashadow in the Spring Preview (1400m). He gets out to a more suitable 1900m here, is fitter for two runs back from a spell and is tremendous each-way value at $11.

TRIAL POINTERS

Evacuation (race three) is an exciting colt by More Than Ready with whose progeny trainer Gai Waterhouse has enjoyed tremendous success, namely More Joyous and Sebring. Evacuation stamped himself as a colt with above average ability and potential after a booming 3.8 lengths debut win at Kembla Grange in April, running a slick 56.2s for the 1000m (last 600m in 32.76s). He has to go to 1400m first-up, but his two trials wins recently have been by 3 lengths and 4 lengths. Only concern is that he has drawn a little wide but otherwise impossible to fault.

Impending (race seven) is a son of the mighty Lonhro out of the dual Group 1 winner Mnemosyne and one of four Godolphin colts in the Run To The Rose. Impending turned heads with a fantastic debut win here at Rosehill before heading up to the Gold Coast for an unlucky third in the Ken Russell Memorial. John O’Shea has brought him up to speed with two lovely trials — that last win over Famous Seamus and Divine Prophet was first rate work from a first-class colt.

WORK WHISPERS

Shards (race two) won the Up And Coming and contested the Golden Rose this time last year and while it is questionable as to whether he is going that well, there is no doubting his ability. The son of Medaglia D’Oro resumed with an even effort (first run as a gelding) here in the Spring Preview and his work has been good since. The John O’Shea-trained galloper partnered with stablemate Drachenfels on Tuesday morning at Warwick Farm galloping over the 1200m n 1:23.76s, coming home the final 400m in 23.58s.

Encostanati (race six) like Shards, will benefit from Deanne Panya’s skill and 3kgs claim. Panya went within a lip of making it back-to-back Sydney metro wins in the space of a week when the Bjorn Baker-trained gelding was nabbed in the last hop here on August 13. Encostanati continues to thrive evidenced by his sterling work on the A Grass at Warwick Farm during the week, running 1200m in an easy 1:22.42s, speeding up the last furlong in 23.2s.

THE BEST BET

Extensible (race two) did the right thing by us two weeks when she scored an authoritative win over 1400m here. She was third up from a spell that day and impressed with the way she attacked the line. The slight increase in trip today is no issue, she enjoyed soft tracks and is drawn to get the perfect run. Taking on the “boys” but she is a very genuine mare racing in top form. She can win again.

EACH WAY

Zoumagic (race five) defeated a smart field of mares at Canterbury, unleashing a powerful surge from the turn to win by a widening margin. She then stepped out at the same venue, was trapped three and four wide the whole trip and still finished strongly to just miss overhauling all-the-way winner Serve And Volley. She is up in grade here but gets in well with the claim and enjoys rain-affected conditions. She is super value at $8.

THE JUDGMENT

ROSEHILL GARDENS

RACE 7: RUN TO THE ROSE (1200m)

James Cummings (trainer) Good Standing: “It’s a hot field. This is a group one in disguise. Good Standing’s stronger but he’s also much more mature so I’d like to think that will transpire into his racing. He’s come back well and he’s trialled up strongly for the race. The horse is in very good shape.’’

Adrian Bott (trainer) El Divino: “He wasn’t entirely comfortable in the trials the other day on the Kensington track but he can get through it (heavy ground). He’s a colt that keeps improving.’’

Glenn Munsie (TAB): “I’m quite happy to be giving Mediterranean another chance here coming off the bottomless heavy 10 at Randwick recently. Blake Shinn said he was never comfortable in it and struggled to get going when he wanted him to. He still finished race off very strongly last 75m and one of only a few on the day that still was making ground to line. Always had a strong opinion of Astern and buoyed by James McDonald preferring him after a very impressive trial last Friday.’’

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Very strong edition, expect multiple group one winners to come from the field. Not a lot of confidence as most are first-up, however, we will be keeping Mediterranean safe. He has the fitness advantage and will get through the heavy going.’’

Blake Johnston (bookie): “Star Turn is a real talent and has a fitness edge on most of his rivals. He will make his own luck and looks the one to beat.’’

Terry Kennedy (Sky Sports Radio): “Mouth-watering contest. Impending’s trials have been real eye-catchers, but I’m sticking with Mediterranean. He actually beat Impending in a trial, has a big fitness advantage and should be undefeated in his two runs back.’’

Verdict: MEDITERRANEAN

TAB Racing Update - The Run to the Rose

RACE 8: PREMIER’S CUP (1900m)

John O’Shea (trainer) Magic Hurricane, Allergic: “It’s a bit of a step up in distance for Magic Hurricane and he’s got a big weight. We were pleased with his last 100m first-up at Rosehill. He’s trimmed up and he’s in the right shape for a horse who has a long spring ahead of him. Allergic flew under the radar a bit last prep and we’ll be looking for him to keep going ahead this time. His win second up was fairly soft in the end, he got into a nice spot, he showed a nice turn of foot and he’s drawn to get a good run again.”

Kris Lees (trainer) Singing, Sense Of Occasion: “This race is obviously stronger than Canterbury, but I’m very happy with Singing. I’m sure he will be most competitive. We’ve given him plenty of long, slow work both before and since his first-up run. He’s had his issues, but he’s been really good so far. Sense Of Occasion’s form is more exposed, but I wouldn’t be dismissing him all the same following the rain in Sydney.’’

Glenn Munsie (TAB): “Deadset two-horse race, for mine, between Singing and Allergic. I have a slight preference for Singing at the better price on offer at present as his only Australian run was full of merit and he should still have plenty of upside. Allergic was an easy winner last start at only his second run in the stable reported pre-race he had improvement in him. Only other runner I could entertain was Sense Of Occasion who backed up a strong trial with an even effort when resuming in a 1400m and the increase to 1900m will help.’’

Grant Palmer (bookie): “We will be risking the two favourites who have come up far too short, and will be in the corner of Magic Hurricane who won the race last year. Strips fitter heading into this and in a truly run race he can be charging home over the top.’’

Blake Johnston (bookie): “Sacred Master hasn’t had the best of luck at his first two back from a spell but has run well. He will be at his peak now and represents good value.’’

Terry Kennedy (Sky Sports Radio): “Only the 61kg on a heavy track has turned me off Magic Hurricane. I’m going wide here with Sacred Master, he’s been luckless his last two starts, loves a wet track, is fit and ready to salute.’’

Verdict: MAGIC HURRICANE

CAULFIELD

RACE 7: MEMSIE STAKES (1400m)

Tom Dabernig (trainer) He Or She, Tashbeeh, Rising Romance: “It’s been a long time since Rising Romance has won but she has been beaten narrowly in a couple of Group 1 races for us. She’s booked into visit Written Tycoon but when that will be we’re not sure yet. He Or She keeps on improving and we will head to the Toorak Handicap and Emirates Stakes with him. Tashbeeh will probably start at big odds but the way he has been going he won’t be the worst in the race.’’

Stephen Marsh (trainer) Sofia Rosa: “I thought she could run a really sharp 1400m in a fresh state. She’s not a dour stayer. She pulled up from the jumpout really well and I think she can run a big race.’’

Glenn Munsie (TAB): “It is usually folly to bet against Darren Weir in any race in Melbourne and this is no different. He provides the first three in betting with Black Heart Bart, Mahuta and Palentino along with Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance. Happy to be with Mahuta again as he pulled up lame in the P.B. Lawrence and is one of only two runners (Lord Of The Sky the other) with more than one run in the last 11 weeks. Tracks speed from Lord Of The Sky and Charmed Harmony then kicks. Lord Of The Sky will run well without the extra pressure he faced in the Lawrence.’’

Grant Palmer (bookie): “Black Heart Bart is deserved favourite, however, I couldn’t tip him at 6-4. Lord Of The Sky is an enigma but with Olly going back on and no The Cleaner in the race to annoy him, could get a cheap lead and prove too hard to run down. Save on the highly talented Alpine Eagle who trialled enormous.’’

Blake Johnston (bookie): “Lord Of The Sky did a stack of work in the Lawrence but still fought on well. He’s drawn perfectly to get a softer lead and will prove hard to get past.’’

Terry Kennedy (Sky Sports Radio): “I’m a card-carrying member of the Palentino fan club, just hoping for some luck from barrier 10. Tally races well fresh and is the knockout horse.’’

Verdict: PALENTINO
