Tents are usually used to hide from bad weather, but one Sydney accountant used the popular camping item to shield from a very different kind of storm.
After a night of no sleep, Robby Nuqui Cangco lost control of his Toyota Rav4 and crashed into two parked cars on Darley Rd, Randwick about 6:15am on July 9.
In the aftermath of the collision, the 34-year-old Bondi man frantically drove his car down the street to embark on an interesting cover-up, parking his car 200m away and covering it with a tent to hide the damage.
He was later found by police huddled behind his bedroom door in yet another attempt at avoiding them.
Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge called the behaviour despicable.
“Your driving was dangerous and then to leave the scene and hide your car was just awful,” she said. “You ran into two cars, you didn’t leave a note, you covered up your car and you don’t even live near there. You live in Bondi and this was in Randwick.”
Cangco told the court he hid his car because he was afraid he would be towed and said he did leave a note on one car.
Asked why he only left a single note, which didn’t include his details, Cangco said he only had one piece of paper.
Magistrate Milledge responded: “Can you not cut it in half? What you did was really mean.”
According to facts tendered to Waverley Local Court, the two parked cars were significantly damaged as a result of the collision.
Cangco moved and covered his car while waiting for his brother to pick him up.
When police arrived at his house later that morning, he was hiding behind his bedroom door and when officers said they wanted to talk to him about an incident, the Bondi man said: “the incident at Darley Rd this morning”.
Cangco was pleaded guilty and was convicted of negligent driving and not giving his details to the owner of damaged property and was fined $1000.
