A former reality TV star told his mum he would kill her husband in front of her and that he would “piss on him after torturing the low life c**t, a court has heard.
Facts tendered to Waverley Local Court showed Charles Stanley Newling, who featured in the 2018 season of the Bachelorette, made the vile threats in more than 37 drunken text messages he sent his mother in the space of three hours.
According to the facts, Newling’s mother and stepfather, who married when Newling was 13-years-old, were extremely fearful due to Newling’s increasingly violent behaviour.
On April 25 about 2.40pm, Newling, who lives in Bronte, texted his mother to say: “Just so you know I’m still alive, doing well and been thinking of you xx”
His mother replied: “good news” with some love heart emojis.
Then Newling, who the court heard had drank a significant amount of alcohol before the exchange, responded with multiple threats to kill his stepdad, including:
“You are still controlled by that flog of a husband … I’m going to kill him one day in front of you before I go … You have no idea what im (sic) capable of but just know it’s not going to be pretty … TDK RIP. The P stands for piss not piece as I’m going to piss on him after I torture the low life C***.”
Throughout the next few hours, the threats continued, including reading: “What if I’m outside right now … Reckon the cops can come that quick … I know where you live, where you work where you eat where you sleep. For all you know I’m in your backyard right now.
“Ide (sic) rather do life in jail to kill that prick than live the life that you’ve both given me … His throat will be slit the next time he tries to go to work … or maybe when he’s at work … Or maybe when he’s taking the bins out … I know all your movements.
“I hope you’ve got a good guard dog because the cops aren’t going to do shit even with an AVO on me. They’re not gonna sit outside your house. How’s it feel knowing your C*** of a husband has a knife coming to his neck, you have no idea where or when.”
Newling’s mother said he had made “serious threats” and she was going to the police but that did not deter the 36-year-old, who wrote “hahaha”.
“I took down two cops and two security guards and got away with it. This one’s a walk in the park,” he texted.
“You made me a wild animal, we can’t be controlled or beaten.”
In court, Magistrate Ross Hudson acknowledged Newling suffered significant childhood trauma, including having to care for his biological father when he was a teenager after his father had an accident and became paraplegic. His father later died in 2018 from an overdose of pain medication.
Newling’s lawyer Scott Schaudin said his client had struggled with alcohol use but had spent a lot of time contributing to the community.
“He had a full-time position as a builder … he appears quite clear headed and rational today,” he said.
But Magistrate Hudson said he must consider the “fear, torment and horror” that Newling’s messages would have caused.
“There are other matters on his record that are violent,” he said. “He admitted to drinking copious amounts of alcohol on night of offending … he said he did not actually intend to carry out the threats.”
Newling was initially refused bail for the offence of use a carriage service to threaten to kill and had been in custody since August 17.
At the time of the threats, he was on a court order following a mid-range drink driving offence in 2021
Magistrate Hudson convicted Newling of using a carriage service to kill and sentenced him to a 13-month prison sentence to be serviced in the community by way of an intensive correction order.
