A Sydney woman was caught with bags of cocaine in her bra and a large knife in her car’s glove box after the driver gave police a fake story in a failed attempt to trick them.
Anita Abi Ghosn, 27, escaped conviction for supplying a prohibited drug and having a knife in public.
According to facts tendered to Waverley Local Court, about 12:40am on Sunday May 15, police saw a woman withdraw lots of cash from an ATM on Campbell Pde at Bondi Beach before walking into a home on Bondi Rd.
Police then saw a silver Nissan Dualis station wagon pull up and drive onto Syd Einfeld Dr.
The station wagon pulled into a left lane and slowed as police drove past. It then pulled in behind police briefly, and suddenly moved across three lanes to turn left and head back towards Bondi Junction.
Suspecting that car was trying to avoid police and having followed it for 10 minutes, police activated their warning lights and signalled for it to pull over on Sprint St, Bondi Junction.
The driver of the car nervously said: “you know you’ve been making me nervous, officer?” and said he knew the police had been following him.
Abi Ghosn was in the front passenger seat and a man they said was named Peter was in the back seat.
The driver claimed they’d been friends with Peter for about a year and he was driving the man home to Pyrmont.
But he refused to show police his phone to prove he texted Peter about it, as he’d claimed.
Anita Abi Ghosn, from Rockdale, said she owned the car and everything inside.
According to the facts, police found a 20cm knife sitting within a sheaf in the glove box. Abi Ghosn said she kept it for self-defence.
Police then found white powder on the gear shifts. Peter eventually admitted he’d gotten into the car to buy cocaine and admitted he didn’t know Abi Ghosn or the driver.
But Abi Ghosn and the driver continued to deny his story or any link to drugs.
Police then found $220 cash in $20 notes in the car.
Abi Ghosn was found with $500 inside her bra in $50 denominations. In her bra, police also found a freezer bag with five or six smaller bags with white powder. The game was up. She eventually admitted she’d intended to supply the cocaine to Peter.
The cocaine was later weighed to equal 2.6g.
Abi Ghosn pleaded guilty to dealing a prohibited drug and possessing a knife in public.
Magistrate Ross Hudson did not convict her, but sentenced her to two conditional release orders, one for two years and one for six months.
