An experienced eastern suburbs GP on bail for several alleged sexual and violent crimes has landed back before a court as police allege he has again assaulted a woman.

John Balafas, 48, has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and contravening an apprehended violence order at a Rose Bay address between September 27 and September 30.

At the time the Bondi doctor was on bail charged with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent; two counts of common assault; one count of assault causing actual bodily harm; property damage and intimidation.

At Downing Centre Local Court on October 13, Balafas’ solicitor Michael Henshall entered pleas of not guilty on his behalf to the two new charges.

The two new charges landed Balafas back into custody overnight before he faced Parramatta Bail Court on October 1.

He was then granted bail again under the same conditions initially imposed in February after he spent a week in custody on remand pertaining to the first set of charges.

Documents tendered to Waverley Local Court at the time indicate police allege Balafas sexually assaulted a woman twice in one night on December 23 last year.

Police will further allege Balafas twice assaulted the woman, broke her iPhone, intimidatedher and assaulted a child known to her between December 2021 and February this year.

His barrister at the time, Peggy Dwyer, told the court the suggestion he had assaulted the woman or the child was “absolutely refuted”.

Balafas was then the part-owner of Bondi Medical Centre and had been a general practitioner in Sydney’s east for more than a decade.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has taken carriage of the first set of charges and the matter was adjourned to December 8 to finalise the brief.

The second set of charges will remain in the local court and have been adjourned for mention on the same date.
