A TEENAGER handed himself in to the Bankstown Police station Thursday morning in connection with the stalking incidents in Belmore in December.

Acting commander of Campsie Police Area Commander Detective Chief Inspector Paul Albury, who led the investigation, told The Express a 17-year-old Belmore man had attended the station this morning to hand himself in.

The teenager was charged with common assault; and stalking/intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical or mental harm. He was given conditional bail to appear in a children’s court on Thursday, March 7.

“He was accompanied by a relative and is currently in the process of being charged,” Det Chief Insp Albury said.

“He is being charged with stalking and assault.

“We had a lot of information yesterday afternoon and overnight after we posted the CCTV images via the media.”

Det Chief Inspector was confident someone in the community will know the man in the video when he spoke to the Express yesterday morning.

About 11pm on Saturday, December 8, a 31-year-old woman left Belmore railway station and was walking on Leylands Pde, Belmore, when she noticed a man walking closely behind her. Fearing for her safety, the woman ran away to safety.

Early on Monday, December 10, police said the same woman was grabbed from behind as she walked along Leylands Pde.

The attacker — believed to be the same man — covered the woman’s mouth and attempted to drag her towards a unit complex, before she was able to escape and call for help.

The man ran from the scene.

Police said CCTV cameras show that a second woman was also followed along Leylands Parade just before the attack.

On Wednesday, Detective Chief Inspector Albury said someone should know who this person is from the images and appealed to them to come forward.

“We are very confident in solving this matter and very confident someone will know him,” Det Chief Insp Albury said yesterday.

“We are also appealing to another woman who was followed and sought help in a front yard of a house on the same day, to come forward and speak to us.

“Further inquiries show the same man was also seen on Saturday, December 22, at Belmore railway station following a number of women over a two-hour period.

“He gave wrong details to the detectives who spoke to him, saying he is new to the area and not familiar with the local roads.”
