Liberal candidate for East Hills Wendy Lindsay, who was verbally abused by a woman and a man while campaigning at Revesby train station, says the incident will not stop her from working for the community.

Ms Lindsay, 46, who is standing for a state seat for the first time, was badly shaken but not hurt when she was allegedly confronted by the pair on Wednesday at about 5.30pm.

The mother of two said it was very distressing that politicians were abused like while doing their job, regardless of the party they were affiliated to.

“I was OK when it happened but felt more fragile the next day,” Ms Lindsay told the Express.

“But I am still going to be out on the street, doing my job.”

Ms Lindsay, the Bankstown Auburn Community Radio Station manager, made a formal complaint to Bankstown police after the incident.

“An investigation into the incident is under way and police are appealing for public assistance,” a Bankstown police spokesman said.

“I really did think a lot before I decided about running for this seat,” Ms Lindsay said.

“Obviously we are out there and politics is polarising but you don’t need to abuse people and thrash their things.

“It did not hit me at first when the woman began abusing me, after recognising me from the flyers I was handing out at the station.

“One of my volunteers tried to defuse the situation after the woman called me a liar and was right in my face.

“She then called my volunteer a racist and then walked up and kicked my campaign A-frame, which was a sturdy one built by my father.

“It was outrageous and got out of hand … everyone is entitled to their opinions but you cannot abuse anyone on the street.

“Volunteers also don’t deserve this and they can be from any party.”

“The woman is described as being aged in her mid 20s, of olive complexion, approximately 165cm tall and with shoulder length dark hair.

“The man is described as being of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, with a solid build and short dark hair.”

Ms Lindsay is hoping to replace outgoing Liberal MP Glenn Brookes in the very imaginal seat of East Hills in next month’s state elections.

This week both Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet visited the East Hills area to announce new initiatives.

Ms Lindsay is up against Labor’s Cameron Murphy and Christian Democratic Party’s Owen Butt, among others.

In her electoral pitch to the voters, Ms Lindsay said previously: “If I am elected in March, I will use my work ethic to advocate tirelessly for our community, fighting for more local services, fighting for better infrastructure and transport that our community needs, as well as more funding for our schools, health and aged care services.
