A rising rugby league star is behind bars after he allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a man for several hours in an attempt to take $10,000 from him.
Samuel Gerrey-Burgess, 25, was arrested and charged with detaining a person for advantage in company and assault causing actual bodily harm after he and two other men allegedly bailed up a man in a Milsons Point apartment for three hours on February 20.
The 35-year old alleged victim was treated at Royal North Shore Hospital for facial and chest injuries.
Gerrey-Burgess appeared briefly in the dock and did not apply for bail prior to a court appearance with his co-accused Dean Contos and Pita Korovou at Central Local Court on May 2.

He was also charged with illegally possessing 0.78g of Xanax when he was arrested in Caringbah on Thursday.
The Caringbah man was once known as the South Sydney Rabbitohs so-called “other Sam Burgess” due to their similar names, though it is believed he never took the field for the club.
Gerrey-Burgess attended St Ignatius College in Riverview and also played rugby in Randwick among his brushes with rugby league success.
