A Sylvania man who hoped to sell more than 20 bags of cocaine in one night has admitted he became a “runner” for a dial-a-dealer operation in a bid to make easy money.

David Christian Anota-Bevanda, 24, pleaded guilty to supplying drugs, possessing drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime and was sentenced in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.

Agreed facts tendered to court state police were patrolling known drug dealing hot spots at Cronulla on April 1.

Police watched on as a man left Northies and walked along Elouera Rd then down a lane, while repeatedly looking at his phone, and got into a car which is a known dial-a-dealer method.

A short time later, police saw the man get out of a car before he was stopped and found with a bag of white powder which he admitted was cocaine he had just purchased from Anota-Bevanda.

Officers followed and pulled over Anota-Bevanda before he was asked what he was doing in the area.

He appeared nervous when he lied and said he was dropping off his mate at the pub.

Anota-Bevanda was ordered to complete 250 hours of community service.

When told the car would be searched, Anota-Bevanda admitted he had 15 bags of cocaine in a small compartment below the stereo system and indicated he had $1500 from the sale of drugs in a backpack in the rear of the car.

Police located the drugs and cash before Anota-Bevanda admitted to supplying cocaine during the night, including to the man caught leaving Northies.

He also admitted he intended to sell the other 15 bags that night and the $1500 was from the sale of six bags.

The drugs, cash and his mobile phone were all seized, with the bags weighing nearly 11g.

In court, lawyer Ali Saleh said his client had committed the offences for “financial gain” but only made $30 per bag sold, but had since educated himself on the harm drugs do to people in the community.

He said Anota-Bevanda was remorseful and had “learnt his lesson”, adding he was seeing a financial counsellor.

Magistrate Hugh Donnelly noted Anota-Bevanda’s role was at the bottom of the criminal group but the organisation could not operate with runners or street suppliers, adding the role was “an essential part” off making drugs available in the community.

He took into account Anota-Bevanda’s limited record, age and that he was a low risk of reoffending.

Anota-Bevanda was placed on a jail sentence to be served in the community in the form of an 18-month intensive corrections order where he must complete 250 hours of community service and pay $1000 fine.
