An apprentice barber will be off the road until September after he was caught driving double the 60km/h speed limit in Sydney’s south

Aden Rabih Jabakhanji, 20, was sentenced in Sutherland Local Court on Thursday after he elected to take his fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h to court.

The court heard Jabakhanji, who lives at Picnic Point, was detected travelling at 120km/h in a 60km/h zone on Henry Lawson Dr, Peakhurst about 6.20pm on February 24.

Jabakhanji’s lawyer told the court her client had completed the traffic offenders program, expressed contrition and had a limited driving record.

She sought leniency for a reduced fine.

The lawyer said Jabakhanji was an apprentice barber and worked in the construction industry, adding he had limited capacity to pay a fine.

Magistrate Hugh Donnelly noted it was often young men who were either victims or drivers in car accidents where they were maimed or killed.

He told Jabakhanji as a licence holder he had a responsibility to the community and his actions that day “put people and yourself at risk”.

He accepted Jabakhanji was remorseful and was “facing up” to what he did.

Mr Donnelly said the manner of driving was too serious and therefore convicted him and imposed a six month disqualification which will expire in September.

The fine was also reduced to $1200.
