A learner driver who allegedly caused multiple collisions, drove on the footpath and into oncoming cars, and ran a red traffic light at Kogarah has been told he caused a “very high level of danger” to the community.

Corey James Reed, 30, was charged with eight driving offences and was formally granted bail in Sutherland Local Court on Monday.

A statement of police facts tendered to court state Reed was allegedly driving a car in Carlton and Kogarah about 1pm on Sunday.

The court heard Reed allegedly drove on the footpath because he refused to stop in traffic and he mounted the sidewalk to get around cars near Rockdale Plaza Dr before he allegedly failed to give way on a roundabout.

Police allege while attempting to travel around cars, Reed allegedly collided with a vehicle on Harrow Rd and drove into oncoming traffic where he caused an additional accident.

Police allege Reed failed to stop and exchange details with the other drivers on both occasions.

He caused a further collision when he allegedly went through a red traffic light at the intersection of Park Rd and Kogarah Bay Dr before he eventually stopped.

Police officers arrived at the scene and allegedly located 29.4g of methylamphetamine inside a container.

Officers also allege Reed held a learners permit and was driving without a licensed driver supervising him.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the Princes Hwy at Kogarah Bay following reports of a crash before officers were told the driver allegedly attempted to flee, but was restrained by members of the public until police arrived.

There were no reports of injuries.

Reed was arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing before he was charged with eight offences including dangerous driving; failing to supply details of a driver; and not stopping at a red traffic light line.

In court, a police prosecutor opposed bail and submitted that Reed’s alleged actions caused “real danger to the community” and multiple collisions.

He said the case against him was strong with police obtaining dashcam footage, witness statements and Reed allegedly made full admissions following his arrest.

The court heard Reed usually lives in Western Australia but was in NSW to attend his godmother’s funeral and had extended his stay on learning his grandmother was terminally ill.

Reed’s lawyer Mohammad Ikram said his client had strong ties to the area with his mother living in Kirrawee and willing to house him during his bail.

The court also heard he had a daughter living in Sydney with his ex-partner, who offered a $5000 surety.

Mr Ikram accepted his driving history did not assist him but noted a number of the charges had fine only punishments if convicted.

Mr Ikram also noted the drug possession charge could change because the meth was allegedly weighed in a container.

Magistrate Philip Stewart said Reed had a “particularly bad driving record” with convictions for driving while disqualified, mid-range drink driving and driving with illicit drugs.

“The level of danger to the community was very, very high,” he said.

Reed was granted bail where he must live with his mother at her Kirrawee home, not occupy a driver’s seat of a motor vehicle. not leave NSW, not consume illegal drugs, and an acceptable person must offer a $5000 surety.

The case was adjourned for two weeks.
