Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

A man had to be tackled to the ground by bystanders after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash in Sydney’s southeast on Sunday afternoon.

The 30-year-old man was allegedly detained in a citizens arrest on Arthur St in Kogarah just moments after he had been involved in an accident outside Red Rooster, at the nearby intersection of the Princes Hwy and Park Rd.

Police from St George PAC and Highway Patrol soon arrived on the scene and placed the man under arrest.

As he sat on the footpath outside a home on the suburban street, the man could be seen breaking into tears while being spoken to by police.

At times he stood up and rested against the fence, before in others lying on his back on the ground with his arm across his face to shield his eyes from the sun.

NSW Ambulance paramedics eventually arrived to assess the man for any injuries, before taking him to St George Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

The driver and passengers of the other car involved in the accident were not injured.

Traffic on the Princes Hwy was backed up for several kilometres as police directed cars through, before tow trucks arrived to clear the car that had allegedly been abandoned at the busy intersection.

Police sources said part of their investigations would centre on what colour the traffic lights had been when the crash occurred.

In a statement, NSW Police said “Officers attached to St George Police Area Command were told a car had allegedly crashed into another car, before the driver attempted to flee, but was restrained by members of the public until police arrived.”

“There were no reports of injuries. The driver – a 30-year-old man – was arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.”
