PUTTING, chipping and driving may not sound like fun to many young girls, but for golfer Michelle Yang it’s her path to becoming a pro.
The Cammeray Golf Club member is this week’s Junior Sports Star nominee.
Michelle’s streak of Sydney tournament wins earned her the title of US Kids Golf Local Tour champion for her age group last summer.
The nine-year-old will compete in her biggest event yet when she takes on other golf prodigies in the US Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina next month.
“As long as I do my best I think I’ll do pretty good,” Michelle said.
“To make it to the final round, that’s my goal.”
Her mother Vanessa Li said Michelle supplemented her training with weekend tournaments.
“Michelle is doing eight hours every day,” she said.
“She is working very, very hard.”
Michelle started golf more than a year ago and found she had a natural talent for the sport.
Michelle dreams of turning professional.
“Maybe when I’m 14,” she said.
