ABOUT 300 extra vehicles will add to Spit Rd traffic congestion in the morning peak period if Mosman Council’s proposal to shut down the Warringah Rd rat run goes ahead.
A recent Traffic Committee meeting supported the introduction of a no left turn from Spit Rd into Warringah Rd on weekdays from 6am to 10am.
Warringah Rd residents want the rat run closed because of concerns that a significant number of vehicles turn left into their street to avoid long hold-ups in Spit Rd and many motorists speed up upon entering their street.
About 935 vehicles use Warringah Rd each day. Surveys on October 9 last year showed that 292 vehicles turned left from Spit Rd into Warringah Rd during the morning peak period.
Council sought feedback on the proposal from 21 streets in the area, including Warringah Rd.
About 80 per cent of all responses supported the closure of the rat run.
Council received 43 responses from Warringah Rd residents and 86 per cent supported the idea.
One of the main reasons given for opposing the idea was that the no left turn at Stanton Rd was encouraging more vehicles to turn left at Warringah Rd. Stanton Rd is the next possible southbound rat run off Spit Rd.
The Traffic Committee agreed to submit the proposal to Roads and Maritime Services for comment.
Before the proposal is implemented the RMS will require council to submit a traffic management plan, including an assessment on impacts along the Spit Rd corridor as a result of the proposal going ahead.
Council believes that reducing traffic volume in Warringah Rd will improve local safety in the area.
